Web site says you can use their clear top coat directly on concrete as a sealer and protector yet it says colored top coat can only be used over their Rust Bullet base coat. any one know why??
Do you want the long answer or the short answer
I picked up the phone after I saw this post and called my friend Allison over at Rust Bullet. This has been a HOT topic of conversation around here -- and there -- for some time now. We would love a link to the information you are seeing so we can see it in context and work with the manufacturer to
clear it up
Clear Rust Bullet is an aliphatic clear urethane with some very impressive resins. We know it sticks like glue to concrete, but we also know it does not have all the same attributes as the gray.
You can put it down direct to concrete but we can't guarantee the longevity. We just don't have enough testing on it. The colors... They were designed to work in combination with the gray base coat. The gray is designed to stick to the concrete and the colors are designed to stick to the gray.
Again, its been a topic of debate and that suggestion may in fact change, but right now that is what all the testing is based off of.
IF you want to try the clear direct to concrete and you are willing to provide before and after shots and let us know how it works for you, we would be happy to give you a special rebate.
NOW FROM ME PERSONALLY: Urethane does not generally stick well over unprepared concrete. It took a lot of convincing before we would offer the gray that way. For a good old aliphatic urethane that we normally sell, I would ALWAYS suggest grinding first. RB believes if there is no sealer in place on the original coating, that the resins in the clear will perform over plain concrete. I have some small scale tests to indicate that, but I do not have any large scale projects to prove it.
