In the process of building a 24x50 pole building and I am planning on applying a coating to the concrete slab. Would anyone recommend the Rust-Oleum brand ? If not what do you suggest or have in your garage ?

Same here, I have Rust-Oleum brand epoxy, and am very pleased. Been down for about 10 months, gas, oil, snow/salt, even dumped a bottle of 409! No problems at all. Very happy with it for the money. But rust-oleum makes two different types: Water based and Solvent based. Get the solvent based. I got mine from garage-toys.com, very satisfied.

Does it work just as well on old floors that have oil stains and specks of paint (from painting the ceiling, oops) etc? I guess I'll find out since I ordered the solvent based one and it's a matter of finding a weekend to empty out the loaded garage and painting the floor.

You need to get the paint and contaminates off the floor as best as possible first.

Nice, but what is 409 going to do? It is just cleaner, it shouldn't harm the floor.

Im very happy here with Rustoleum get the professional/industrial version. Its more money but worth it... I did the first half of a 4 car last year held up great. Illinois winter with salt and snow. Cars in and out everyday. I also used the clear Rustoleum top coat it really brings out a shine. PREP is the key the floor must be clean and scuffed up..

Is the clear coat just for looks or does it make the coating more durable ?

I would say it also helps protect from chemical spills, oil, gas etc...For the extra money its worth it. If done after the epoxy floor is done there is no prep work. just mix and paint.... Also with the industrial version the top coat has to go on within 5 days or the whole floor has to be scuffed again....

It's not the brand name but rather the chemistry ! Just go to your local "commercial" paint store and tell them what you want to accomplish and what the current condition your concrete slab is in
