Now that I'm home long enough to work on that loooooong list of projects....I figured it was time to clean up my drill press vice that got a 'little' bit rusty while being exposed to outside air during my garage rebuild.

It actually looked worse than this a couple of months ago, but I sprayed it down with WD40 and let it sit for a couple of months.

This is last night...

Then I dunked it in vinegar over night....

And the final result.....it does take a little rubbing with a 3m scratch pad...but the rust comes off real easy.

Straight vinegar seems to work the best....I mix it 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar. It takes a little longer, but I'm doing some bigger parts....plus I'm cheap. Need to find a place I can buy it in bulk, It's about $3.50 a gallon in the grocery store...

Yep....straight vinegar.....

I think it would have worked in a couple of hours had the vise not been covered with WD40. If I had de-greased it before hand...I think only an hour or two would have been necessary.

Occupant...XY table? Even my wife is using it....she is drilling small holes in these little wood hearts that she is painting....makes me wonder how I did without one for so long....

Mixture of Vinegar, Turpintine and lemon juice do a good job to. The turpintine cuts the oils, the citric acid in the lemon juice is a iron sequesterant (pulls rust out of pores). Good for cleaning up old tools that have been oiled for years like blades on hand planes when sharpened with oil stones.

What sort of proportions would you use these in?
