I've got some tools that are in good shape for the most part, but are starting to gather rust where the chrome is wearing. I've heard vinegar works for this kind of stuff and i've also heard that i should use a scotch brite wheel. Any suggestions? And if i should use a scotch brite wheel, which one should i order?

I would give evaporust a try; it will not remove any chrome that is left... Autozone/HF sell it!

and wipe them down in gun oil, both as a way to remove rust and prevent it.

I wipe all my tools, chrome or not, down all the time.

Don't use Scotch Brite, it is abrasive. You will scratch the chrome.

Vinegar is fine.

If it is stained, oil and fine steel wool do well, as will a well soaped SOS pad. (The oil/soap keeps it lubricated so the fine wool does not scratch)

Another solution that works well is NEVR-DULL.

I've used B&G "Rust Remover" for as long as I can remember. It really does what it says it will.

I used to work on gritter lorries, that makes your tools rusty!

I'm mobile and usually work on vans and lorries, my tools (like me) are always getting wet so I regularly open the drawers the next day to see my latest tools rusting!

A gritter, also known as a sander, salt spreader or salt truck.
