Rust Removal

I'm in the process of restoring a 65 Chevelle. I plan to replace every bolt on this car with Stainless Steel bolts. However, I'm running across several rusted on bolts. For example the front parking light assembly is heavily rusted. No holes in it but thick rust. So my question is...Besides breaking out a sander or dremel tool....

Have you guys run across any liquid rust remover that works???

PB Blaster is the best I've found for rusted bolts. As far as cleaning rust off the bolts and body, I use this thing that's like a plastic coated wire wheel mesh. I have a few that you mount in a regular drill, but my favorites are the ones I get from swap meets that mount in my angle grinder.

What would be the point of all stainless? New bolts lightly oiled would outlast the life of the car and stainless is not designed for every application. A lot of bolts are grade 5, I would tend to be more worried about the correct ones.

I owned a 65. Actually my first brand new car was a 64 Chevelle SS 283 4spd Red. I bought a 65 in gold and a 66 SS 396. They were rust buckets but fun.

I kind of agree, some of those old cars were cool looking for their time buit in all reality they were pretty much junk when they were new by modern standards. Even the best car new back in the day cant hold a candle to my 2000 Cadillac. I havnt run it out to the track but its fast, I would be curious how this stock car runs against a 396 Chevell, I bet you would have to quite a bit of work to get it to compare and it aint gonna get 23 MPG day in and out and not going to need even so much as a set of plugs for 100K miles. Many of you guys know more about racing than I do but I punched it out the other day, didnt even get on it hard at first but it said about 110 in a quarter mile or so and was really coming on yet.

Be careful when you replace those fasteners. Most stainless bolts don't have anywhere near the tensile strength of a grade 5 or grade 8 capscrew.

I've been pretty impressed with this stuff...although I've only used it by filling a bucket and dipping the pieces I wanted into it. My rusted brake calipers came out almost looking like new.

Stainless steel will work for fastening things that don't hold a lot of wait. Pluse I got a good deal on the SS bolts. Sure not every bolt on the car will be SS but it looks good on parts that are mostly cosmetic.

Yes, I agree these cars do tend to rust if not taken care of properly.
Yes, cars are better built these days...but then again so is everything else.
Yes, I could probably spend less money buying a new car......

But I like these classic cars and from the look of things a lot of other people do too.

Coca-Cola. Removes rust from damn near everything, and is environmentally friendly to pour down the drain or on your grass. Kind of an overnight thing, though.

Coke contains phosphoric acid which is used in industry to remove ferrous oxide(rust) from steel.

Thats right! I used it to remove rust from a boat anchor once

SafestRustRemover is also environmentally safe, product can be disposed of in any household drain but be sure to filter out rust and particals before sending it down the drain. Filtering after every use will also extend product life cycle.

This carborator would have cost $250.00 to rebuild, it is off a boat. After soaked SRR it was as good as new.

How about Taco Bell hot sauce or is that only for cleaning pennies.
