Rustoleum Epoxy question

My family just put up a 30x45 and we are currently doing the floor. It is more or less a pole barn to store vehicles during the winter and to work on my truck. We have the rustoleum product, but the concrete is brushed. Can i use some kind of cheaper primer before applying the epoxy instead of using 3 gallons on one 12x30 section?

Hate to say it, and others here will probably echo this but if it is brushed, you should use a floor grinder to smooth it and that will make it ready to apply epoxy (you did buy the solvent base I hope)

Maybe someone has done it on a brushed finish but I dont know of any, maybe someone here has insight. I would think coverage would suffer. I used 3 kits of the 2-part solvent based Rustoleum on 750sf after I floor grinded it.

Again, maybe someone has insight here but I havent heard of anyone having success with primers.

i obviously know we SHOULD grind it, but due to not having the time, just wondering if a cheap primer would work.

The best answer you are probably going to get is from Rustoleum themselves. I asked a number of questions to them, and they were generally helpful.

There is no cheap primer you can use.

If you are trying to level the floor with a waterbased epoxy you're going to be sorry. When waterbased epoxies are applied to thick a portion of the water that evaporates won't get out. That trapped water will cause severe yellowing as well as a weak floor. You should be looking at products that are 100% solids.
