I have some leftover cheap stuff (box store garage coating - Rustoleum Epoxyshield waterbased resin and hardner ). This was leftover from a small job I finished on my basement stairs last week. I ended up buying a gallon (standard pack) of this cheap stuff on sale because the box stores didn't carry quart kits. I measured proper ratio and used only a small quantity.

I am wondering if I can use Rustoleum Epoxyshield garage coating on a rusted metal cabinate. The rusted metal cabinate is an eyesore really and I have no use for the leftover Rustoleum.

Do you guys think Rustoleum will adhere to a rusted metal cabinate? If yes, how well will it stick do you think? Anyone tried this? What's your guess if you never tried?

I am still undecided though. I am debating between primer + metal paint spray versus leftover Rustoleum. Just asking what you guys think. I might give it a try.

Yes, will post the pictures when done. thx.

NO NO NO -- it is waterbased. putting a waterbased coating on a rusty surface only makes more rust...... also floor coatings are designed for self leveling - expect lots of drips and sags before you get your rust bloom

Paul has spoken! And I don't mean me!

In theory though, a 100% solids non-water based type probably would be just fine as a covering if prepped below by roughening up the surface well. But the self leveling features would make it hard to do. Perhaps if you did each side as a flat surface, one little batch as a time to coat the whole thing... I've tossed around maybe making an epoxy top of a workbench for instance. - Paul

Okay, that is what I was waiting to hear. Makes sense. Given what both Pauls' have stated and which makes sense, I have decided not to paint the rusted file cabinet with Rustoleum. I will find some creative use for the leftover Rustoleum.
