Rustoleum Epoxyshield Question

I see that a lot of guys on this forum have used this product, so I thought this would be a great place to ask my questions.

I have already done the following:

1. Power washed the whole floor. This took almost 3 hours.

2. Degreased 2x I noticed that this didn't do much.

3. Used the supplied Acid Etch

4. I've also rinsed/squeegeed the entire floor more times than I can count.

After all of that, which has taken 2 days, there are still several oil/grease stains on the floor that don't want to come out. As a result, I just went out and purchased Quikrete Oil Stain Remover. I want to put this down over the oil stains, however, I've already acid etched the floor. Will I have to etch the floor again? If so, can I use muriatic acid instead of the supplied acid etch that came in the kit?

Good morning Smolenski7,

I'm in the process myself and after much research I'm waiting for my paint to come in (Rustoleum Epoxyshield solvent base) (etching 2/3rds done). To answer your question.I don't believe you will need to re-etch as you have removed some of the top of the concrete already which is what the paint will bond to.If your using the water based rustoleum I'm pretty sure the direction say do DO NOT use muriatic acid they have citric acid in the kit.Best of luck with your project.

Likely too late to help, but just in case.

If you think your floor is clean, go back and clean it again !

A clean surface is essential. The preparation is critical and why coating your floor is such a pain. I know many hawk floor finish products but there is no real shortcuts to having a proper and clean surface.

Sorry, the preparation work is hard work.

Listen to oldgeek... Prepping your floor is ESSENTIAL to getting good adhesion. Using a waterborne epoxy that breathes (like SUPERCOAT with W.E.T. Chemistry) is the way to keep it down.

I'm a rep for a large paint company and I have been involved in lots of epoxy coating applications .The only times I have ever seen a floor fail is due to poor surface prep or improper mixing of the product . I believe that most coating companies make a or distribute a quality product , so I would very strongly encourage you to keep working at that oil stain . You may want to rent a scarifier or have the area shot blasted to ensure that the surface is prepared correctly.
