rustoleum on drywall?

I was wondering how regular oil base rustoleum would work to make a tough, water resistant finish on drywall. Seems to me it would be decent unless it were to cause some sort of moisture problems.... would it form a vapor barrier? Has anyone tried this?

Probably wouldn't be much different from regular oil based exterior house paint. Use a semi-gloss (if you can find one) and it will be easy to clean.
I used semi-gloss white interior latex in my shop and it's had no problems for 10 years.

should be fine , don't use it as a primer on bare drywall , use latex primer, otherwise the fibers raise & you'll have a mess.

I think I know why you are asking... It looks like you can buy gallons of Rustoleum at the big box stores now cheaper than decent quality house paint.

I noticed that last night... hadn't thought of using it in place of house paint but that is a good idea...

I used it to paint the red stripes on my walls in my shop, cause it's what I had around. Much better rolled than brushed. Some of the brush marks never flattened before it dried.

Are you using it for the sole purpose of making the drywall water resistance? Do you plan on getting the drywall wet or just doing it as a precaution? Water could still weep into the drywall from the bottom since it would be hard to coat the bottom of the drywall against the floor or the back of it. Water tends to travel up the drywall if the bottom gets wet. My buddy had about 2 inches of water in his basement and the water travels up about 2 feet.

I'm just impressed with rustoleum paint. It's cheap and has heald up really well on my projects from an old rusty snowplow blade to an old rusty chain link fence ( you roll it on with deep knap rollers) and a whole bunch of things in between. I'm not planning on getting my walls wet but if they were to get sprayed or something they'd be well sealed. I have a cement block stem wall so the sheetrock's safe from standing water anyways. I think the shop would look great with a gloss coat of an off white..... maybe a couple of stripes or something too. The house is due for a paint job too, hmmmmm.

I don't know if that would stop the drywall from rusting like it does on metal, but it's worth a try I guess. LOL
