First off, let me say that I love this site. Seeing all these amazing garages/workshops. And all the hard work and dedication u guys are putting into them. Makes me want to "Imitate it," lol! Well, this is my first garage... House as well! And I want to bump it up a notch. Ive finished all the work inside the house. Now its time to take it outside.

Before buying the house and finding this site. I bought the basic Rustoleum garage kit (no clear coat). But after seeing all the brands and applications available, Im thinking of returning it. So far I really like what I see from the Epoxy Coat system w/ clear.

For a typical single car garage, no car parking. What would you guys recomend? Something not toooo expensive, and wont lift up on me in a year.

Thanks

Buy a quality product, avoid epoxies with extenders like solvents or water, although those additives are sometimes necessary in some coatings, they're generally not needed with the new formulations of epoxies. Be sure to take a few minutes and do the math - that is determine exactly how much the product will be on the floor when all is said and done. For the most part size does matter - a thicker coating will out perform a thinner one.

This forum is a great resource, a lot of honest reviews from other DIYers. I can spout off all I want, but I'm clearly biased. So research what people just like you have done, the problems they had, the tips they found useful, and whether or not they recommend their choice to others.

When you've made your choice and received your products, do review the instructions, and review them more than once.

Don't take shortcuts, either with the prep work or the application.

If you decide to mix up less than a full kit, carefully measure out the individual components and make certain you have the correct ratio.

Most coatings have a limited pot life, so have a game plan when you do the install, make sure you have all the right supplies, work it all out before hand. Make a plan, and work the plan.

The application instructions may vary a bit between different suppliers, but they all share some basic points. If you want to check out our directions to get an idea of what's involved, you can download a copy here. Of course it's for reference only and you must follow the specific instructions of whatever product you finally decide on.

I bought the rustoleum junk too, but after my old man put it down in his garage and it lasted less than a year before disintegrating, I started looking around...

I found sites like this and ended up using the Wolverine system and it is beautiful and I wouldn't do it any other way. I still have those 3 cases of Rustoleum that I have to put up on Craigslist sometime soon...

See attachments.

So, the Rustoleum is really ****? My girlfriend bought it for me as a present, so I have to put it down, but is it really that bad? Even if the prep is top notch?

AlphaGarage, can you add my username to view your document? It won't let me view it without your permission. My username is christoth

Thanks,

Where do you live and what will you use it for? Hot tire pick-up or any prolonged exposure to salt in a northern winter will instantly kill that rustoleum stuff.

I put the Rust-Oleum 238466 Professional Floor Coating Kit, Dunes Tan in my 1200' shop. Did all of the prep work right, and laid it down myself. It's only been in for about 2 months, but it's doing great so far. It's held up to dropping a running angle grinder on it, huge oil spill, spray paint overspray, and more.

The spray paint came right up with a little bit of laundry detergent and a scrub brush. Washed it down, and it looks like new.

It's a $400 floor, so I have lowish expectations from it. No clear coat, just the main product. Does it look like an $8000 floor? Nope, but that $7600 sure buys a lot of car parts...

If you have the money to do it, or if you need showroom quality, by all means, spend it, but for me, the Rustoleum has been a great product. I bought an extra kit for touch ups.

My floor was brand new poured and cured concrete, then acid washed and cleaned thoroughly.
