I've been using this primer along with the recommended Rustoleum "Specialty reducer" to prime metal. 50/50 ratio as per the can. I've got to spray something and I'm out of the specialty reducer.. Can I substitute acetone?

Google search shows "Specialty Reducer is a blend of Acetone and Methyl n-Amyl Ketone"

Acetone by itself will thin the product but the evaporation rate, indeed the amount of acetone that will evaporate just between the gun and the painting surface will be greater. Your flow out rate will likely be affected. But I don't see why not. It won't degrade the coating, just make spraying different.

The SDS says 75 -100 Acetone, so it might have 10% Methyl n-Amyl Ketone.

I would use it without hessitation.

Acetone worked fine. Might be less toxic smelling. Not sure.

When did acetone gallons jump to $24? I could have sworn I paid $15 last time.

Thanks guys

if we could buy mineral spirits in CA, it would be 4x the price of gas. I clean paint brushes in gas now and I'm sure I'm doing the environment a lot of good. Thanks, CA.

Oh, they still sell Rusto and shellac, just can't buy thinner or alcohol.

New York will be following CA down the rabbit hole.

I have thinned Rustoleum with lacquer thinner, never had an issue.
The can says you can thin it 10%. That is assuming you are going
to brush apply it. If you spray it, you can thin it more.
