First and foremost great forum this place is awesome!

Question, just bought a house that has the Rustoleum standard epoxy with flake. I've read on several different manufactures web sites that I can recoat providing the original bonding is good and is sanded with 80-120 grit dependent on manufacture. I also read that to check the bond/adhesion is to cut a 8" 'X' on the floor and press duct tape in the middle of the 'X' and remove in several spots and if the epoxy comes up the bond is no good. The floor has passed that test, to be hones the floor is perfect just want to change the color.

With that said I have a 600 sq. ft. garage floor and I like the gloss look and I like the color of the dark grey Rocksolid. Here are my issues I have a very limited time frame to install and somewhat limited budget as I would like to see if there is a better product out there around that price for the same results. I do not want a base/clear system as this floor is going to get beat on and they scratch and do not hold up to the byproducts of welding. I have no issue with sanding and recoating every 3-5 years if needed just don't see the need to tear up a $2K plus floor. Also ease of install is always a plus! Don't get me wrong I am not looking for a $2K floor for $300 I know you get what you pay for here is what I am looking at...

With all of that out of the way I was thinking ( automotive painter here :D) of mixing some metallic additive from my local paint supplier or some of the smaller flake for the granite look, just something different. Any of you folks mess with tinting or additives to the poly floor coating?

Looking forward to hear your thoughts, opinions, and experiences!

Hi, metallic additives are designed to be used with 100% solids clear epoxies which we carry. We have never seen metallics added to pigmented coatings. As for use of flecks, they are great, but if not topcoated you end up with millions of dirt collecting overlapping edges which are impossible to ever clean, hence why fleck floors should always be topcoated.

We do offer metallic flekes which are actually tiny pieces of Nayarit which get broadcast onto the floor like regular flecks. These are usually used in clubs, playrooms, mancaves, etc.

If your floor has a well bonded epoxy coating on it you can lightly sand that and put a proper metallic epoxy system over that, and then clear coat it to protect it. Cost of this runs in the low $1.00 per sq foot since you don't need a primer.
