Has anyone used the water based Rustoleum or Tremclad?
I have some painting to do outside on metal and my kids want to help, would be so much easier to clean up with the water based, just reluctant to change from what I usually use.
And how does water based paint stop rust? Wouldn’t water cause rust?

I've used the water based tremclad on a few projects around the yard. Not sure if it will hold up the same as the oil based stuff, time will tell.

If the metal is bare then you have to use the primer first. I guess it doesnt rust since the primer dries very quickly, and would seal out air which is required for oxidation to occur.

I tried the water based stuff once and never again. Maybe it's just me but I hated it. My favorite rust converter paint is Rustoleum Professional. I have to go across the border to get it a Lowes or elsewhere as I can't find it here. After having used the Rustoleum Professional stuff, I don't like Tremclad anymore. Same company but I don't think they mix the stuff the same. The Rustoleum non-water based paints really don't have much of an odor to them compared to the olden days.

I've tried the Rustoleum Professional primer but it seems to me that the topcoat doesn't bond all that well compared to painting directly onto properly cleaned metal.

I tried POR-15 on some car suspension parts last year and hated it. Once it dries you can't recoat it so you have to get it right the first time. Expensive too.

I’ve used quit a bit of it and I like it. Follow the directions exactly. You will be surprised at first because it comes out a different color then dries to the correct color. We had a spray booth and did a lot of priming and finish painting. It works well as a DTM product on clean metal.
We would mostly use Rustoleum oil based paint because it dried faster. We could paint one day and install the next. The water based went on better and even though it was dry to the touch it took three to four days to cure. We didn’t have room to let stuff sit for several days before installing.
Last time I moved the shop I sold the spray booth and started subbing out some fab work. What little we did at the shop I started using the water based paint for finish work. I have a lot of regular customers and as I followed the work we did for them I found that the water based paint looked better over the years and seemed to be more durable and resistant to damage.

I have used the Rust-Oleum Latex but only for two indoor projects. I used brown around some window frames and white for the baseboard heat covers in an upstairs 1/2 bath. That was 3-5 years ago and it still looks great. I have not used it outdoors at all. All depending on how much you are painting it might be nicer to use. It does clean up easily.

For those in Canada, it appears there are a lot of places just like this - ask the US neighbor to make a Lowes run and set the cans by the fence LOL.
