Rusty cabinet paint

Bought a lightly [surface] rusted metal cabinet ........was going to lightly sand to remove rust, than using the majic tractor and equiptment paint [tractor supply] oil based paint, I will use primer with hardener than paint finish with harderner boththined for spraying .........Any thoughts ?????problems ???? Any better [easier] way to do this.............lazy bobbycoke

Sand. Then use rusty metal primer. Then whatever color you want

Navel jelly or other rust neutralizer chemical and then prime and paint. The problem w/ sanding is you can't ever get to all the small areas but the rust sure did. Otherwise, POR15 is specifically for what you want to do but isn't cheap.
