Rusty nails and screws

Hi all. Newbie here. My folks have passed and I'm going through my dads garage and sheds. He has a TREMENDOUS amount of tools and parts and screws and nuts. I have no idea what a lot of this stuff is. Not sure if I should I try and save them or take to scrap. Right now I have 3 tubs of rusty nails and screws. I'd like to try and save them. I plan on building a green house and a bigger chicken coop. I was told I could make a lye bath. How exactly does that work. And how would I keep the nails from getting rusty again. Here is a picture of the nails and screws in question. (And this is just the teeny tiny tip of the iceberg.)

Hi!
I'm going through the same thing at my parents and grandparents place.
Looks like the same stuff. Living during the Great Depression they saved everything. On the work bench is a wooden box with bent nails. Granddad would hammer them straight as he made something.
Today I can't imagine what I'll do with that stuff...truck loads of hardware, plumbing and electrical supplies.
Maybe check if you have a Re-Store for useable things. Rusty would be scrap imho.

Scrap everything you can replace.

If those are cut nails I would save them. Use vinegar and then light oil once clean. Lye is crazy.

If I had them they would be all scraped. If you go through every screw and nail and as many buckets and pails as I can imagine you have to deal with your going to be a long time at it. BCD.

I dealt with the same thing when my dad passed. scrapped it all. the time & patience required to sort everything is astronomical.
keep the old flat cut nails for posterity , even there you have lots of them. might be able to sell them on ebay or whatever for better than scrap value tho

I gave a lot of that kind of stuff away...the Amish still use older tapered screws and square nails around here...I hate just scrapping anything.

I have had some buckets of old bolts, screws and nails and rummaged around in them for the last 45 years, and only on a few occasions have i found one i could use. The rest I have just put on the scrap pile.
Old blacksmith made nails I cherish and re use.
Cut nails aren't worth a lot of bother unless they're easy to clean up, you can just buy new ones made on the same old machines from Tremont Nail Factory.
