Rusty removal - Craftsman engine turned tool faceplates

I have this table saw that has some surface rust. How do I remove the rust and save the engine turned finish on this?

I have used aluminum foil with water on it to remove rust from polished Christmas ornaments.

The engine turning is fragile and lightly applied. Any type of abrasive will ruin it. I've had success with Nevr-Dull (available at most local hardware stores). This will take A LOT of elbow grease, but will be worth it in the end.

Just pull a wad of the wool out of the can and start rubbing vigorously. Wipe it down with a clean cloth periodically to check your results, and then go at it again, repeatedly.

When done buff it out with a clean soft cloth and apply a coat of wax to preserve it.

Is it rust, or is it something else? If it is truly rust, I'm wondering if Evap-o-rust might be a good option.

Disturbing the surface is what destroys the engine turning. I would start as least invasive as possible. With evaporust, you don't have to scrub, just let it sit. Might be something to try on a more hidden area and see the results.

Second vote for never dull, used it for years. The container will last 4 ever Very easy on the metal.
