That turned out nice. I have some old Snap-on sockets. Would Evaporust work or would it mess up the chrome that is left?

Evapo-rust claims it is safe for all surfaces. From my experience this is true. Vinegar will eat chrome, but I have soaked chrome plated tools in Evapo-rust without any problems.

I really do not believe this is true. I just soaked a heavily corroded ratchet in vinegar today, multiple times. The chrome was not damaged.

What vinegar will do is eat any rust that has seeped under your chrome. This will cause the chrome, already detached from the bond it had with the original steel, to fall off. But, the vinegar is eating rust, not chrome.
