rusty windmill

I just recieved a minature 8' yard ornament windmill, it has light surface rust and i was wondering other than the old wire brush and elbow grease what is the easiest way to get the windmill ready for a fresh coat of paint - then what is the best paint to use. " rustoleum " ???????? is there an easy brush on stuff??

rustoleum has small brush on cans as well as the rattle stuff. I use it on a variety of things and personally think it works great.

Zep at Home Depot has a 1 gal bottle ,Calcium,lime, rust remover it's less than $10 mix 50/50 in a spray bottle wear eye protection and gloves , let it sit a while rinse and thoroughly rinse and immediately wipe dry maybe with an air gun, works great on mild rust, I also soak nuts and bolts in a plastic jar overnight and when dry clean up with a wire brush ( I have an old Ford P/U, most hardware are fine thread , a costly price to replace)

I have one of those windmills. I took the top part off and sandblasted it and then painted it. The stand just got wire wheeled with an angle grinder the best I could and then painted with multiple coats of primer.

Mine had some kind of big nylon bushing in it that the blades turned on. It was terribly worn so I drilled it out and pressed in some bronze bushings. Now it turns smooth as silk.
