I'm building a 34' x 34' shop with a 10' overhang to park the camp trailer under. I have very building experience and i'm looking for some recomendations. What would the pros and cons be between a lean to vs coming out further past the shop with truss's. Thanks for the input!

If you are talking about making the roof trusses 44' long (34' + 10' overhang) I would not do that. It would be a pain to close off the siding properly where the trusses penetrate the common side wall of the overhang and shop. Also trusses for the overhang just gives more places for birds to perch and **** on your vehicle. I would minimize the bird perching places.

For ease of construction I prefer a lean to for a situation like this. For a 10' span you will only need 2x8's or 2x10's (check a span table for correct size) and I agree with WNYflyer, that the fewer places for birds to perch means less poop on your toys.

By the way, I am only talking from personal experience, I have built a few lean to's and do not do it professionally.

not really, you would just create a flat roof across the car port area much like you would in any porch.

Ditto, plus I would frame up the wall between the carport and the shop independently of the building frame, because one day you'll want the other 10' of shop space :bounce: , then you just move the tin to the outside and take the porch roof metal to fill in the ends with the wall you'd removing (assuming pole barn). Basically, no money involved, just time.

Lean-to off the side of the building won't be as high as continuing the trusses out.
Lean-to will be less expensive.
Lean-to will look more like an add on to the building than continuing the trusses out.

Really, there is no advantage to using trusses to span the 44', and leaving 10' of it open. If you are already putting up a new building, the only real extra cost associated to enclosing all 34x44' is an overhead door. A dividing wall to separate the 2 spaces could be as simple as a 2x4 stud wall sheathed in OSB. If you would prefer the RV carport area open, then the lean to construction would likely be a more cost effective option. IMO, you're spending the money already to build the shop, whats a few more thousand for the extra 10' of potential future shop space. Also, keep in mind that in the future, if you want the larger shop, you can always add the lean to onto the 34x44 shop...it never ends haha.
