Ryobi 10" drill press spindle stopping under load

Hey GJ. I've been lurking on this board for quite a while and finally found a tool problem that maybe you guys can help me figure out how to fix.

I have a Ryobi DP100 (I think) 10" drill press. I bought this on CL and haven't had the chance to use it until the weekend. The motor runs strong and the belt is new so the speed of the chuck is very strong. However, the moment that I insert a bit into the chuck and try to drill a piece of wood the chuck stops spinning (I should note that my test was a 1/2" spade bit cutting into a clean 2x4).

I opened up the top lid of the drill press to see the pulleys in action. I figured that the belt was slipping but it appears to actually be the spindle that's not twisting anymore under load. I can actually see on the top of the drive pulleys where the spindle is exposed that the spindle actually completely stops turning.

Any ideas how to fix this? I don't think I was being too aggressive with the spade bit and was feeding it very slowly. It would hardly penetrate before stalling.

I've attached a schematic of the Ryobi DP100 (click the link for identified toolparts). Maybe somebody on this board will know how to fix my CL drill press.

Thanks!

Not sure bout yours, but, mine has a set screw in the center pulley grove. you might have to take off the belt to see it.

# 49 "Pulley set nut" check to see if it's loose. On my delta, the pulley is on a tapered section of the shaft, and the nut is a left handed thread.
Mine uses a 1 1/4" socket, or 32 MM, either will work.
Not sure if yours is the same, but looks like it from the drawing.
Thanks,
Tony

Winner winner!

Yes, it was the set screw. I didn't even see it because it was on the same pulley as the belt.

I tested it and it worked out great. Drove into the wood as expected.

It does make a pretty awful noise. Is it advisable to take the spindle and pulley mechanisms apart and lube/oil/grease any particular parts?

Thanks guys!

Yep, a set screw (not shown on that schematic) was the culprit. The drill does make a lot of noise. Any recommendations on how to quiet things up?

Hard to say w/o hearing it.
Maybe post a video on you tube.
Maybe run w/o the belt to try to narrow it down to the motor or the spindle. Maybe try packing some grease down in the spline's of the spindle.
I have not done this, yet, so not sure how to go about it. My craftsman makes a little noise when you lower it, so I may try the grease.
How many speeds is this, It don't have a center pulley with maybe a bad bearing does it?
Thanks,
Tony

No key under mine. just a flat.

Mine doesnt have a pulley set nut. but to be fair mine isn't a ryobi either. It's a 82 duracraft. As with most imports, the design is common and seems to be copied and or rebranded with various degrees of quality.

As for the noise, Most of the noise from mine comes from the belt guard vibrating. Try holding the guard close.

I just had this problem. I figured the belt was loose but it was actually the pulley for the spindle that was loose. There was a 24mm nut on the spindle, inside the pulley that needed to be tightened. Didn't have that size, had to go to the hardware store, but tightening that fixed the problem.
