You misunderstand. The paper label is the Pittsburgh name. China is embossed in the metal of the wrench.

I sit corrected on that. But trust me, there's no value in the name Pittsburg as far as tools good.

Thanks LXCam. I did not know that. I have always been taught, if you do a job do it well and put your name on it.

Pittsburgh is the harbor freight brand. Oh there are a couple gems in the bunch, but 95% of thier stuff is utter ****. Cast components being some of the worst. Now sure as **** they'll be some guys that'll tell ya HF tools are the best thing since sliced bread and on par with snap on, but we all suffer from some form of delusion. Hell I keep playing the lotto thinking I might win one day.

Guys do you mind helping me on something else? I posted this on another thread but can't find it again to see if anyone responded. I have an old vise that I was planning to scrap. Nothing exactly like on line, that I can find. I've attached a few photos. Is it worth keeping or should I leave it on the scrap heap?

Besides it would be almost as hard to mount on the wall as the slab of marble I mounted just inside the door.

oN problem d42jeep. I've got a couple of questions you guys might be able to help me with. #1 Did Pittsburgh ever have their pipe wrenches made in china? and #2 Does anybody know what I can do with a 48" Armstrong iron pipe wrench, other than use it as a boat anchor?
They make stuff in India, etc as well, still mostly *****. the only reason P'burg has their name on anything is so you can not exchange other no-name tools on their dime.

If it works, a 48" pipe wrench has a value. A new one is $200 +, and might not be any better. If the teeth are sharp, it could be 100 years old, and work the same as a new one. I'd keep it just for the time I could use more leverage...why struggle with a 36 when you can one hand it with a 48?

I will add it to the CL list. If I'm reading it correctly, it says made in china at the bottom of the tag. On the 48" beast, my friend knows a guy who owns a local plumping company and he might be interested.

My friend has a Eriez magnetics separator he is trying to sell as lawn art. Do any of you guys know about these things? No pics yet, but it is about 3' tall 18" across and about 2-2 1/2' in length. I think it might be from around the 1950's.

My S-K items arrived at warp speed and are nicer than the rest of the tools in the set. Thanks again.

That's great. I worry about stuff getting to where they belong all the time. The rest of the sockets are in as good a condition as that one. Still have 6 sockets.

I sold the S-K toolbox to the same friend for $50 with the promise that he will take care of it and pass it on.

Great news! I feel a weird sense of responsibility towards classic tools - almost like finding a pet a good home, lol!

Out of curiosity, does that bar have any sort of markings to help identify it? If not, I have to wonder how many of those I have passed over through the years ...

Brian,
The bars have no markings whatsoever. When I picked up the original set it came with the bar, although it was in rough condition. It took me a while to figure out that it fit the holes in the sockets perfectly. I believe that this style set originally was used by the military during WW2, as it matches the specifications of an upper echelon set. I imagine it had more of a wartime finish though.

I have picked up a few recently and none of them have markings. I always pick them when I see them, they are often missing from sets, so you never know.
