One of my screw drivers has the blade eroded away. Looks like maybe got some acid or something on it. Anyhow the handle is good and the Damn snap-on guy will not peplace it. Probably the last piece of theirs I will buy.

So you expect a screwdriver handle to handle acid?

As long as we are posting disintegrating screwdrivers, does anyone have a picture of what the 80's Snap-on ones that disintegrate, look like (during the process)?

I inherited one that I believe is disintegrating like that, and left it in a box somewhere since at the time, no Snap-on man, and we don't have replacement hard handles readily available.

Thanks

I ran across one at the pawn shop the other day... awhile back I got a bag full of them for $10 with some junk at an auction. Of course handles aren't warranty items and if I remember right they went to some friend of a friend who was a mechanic and thought he could get them warrantied.. last I heard his dealer still said no. Hahaha..

Basically the handles start to turn chalky white and crack like someone sucked all the moisture out of em. They literally split like an overcooked hot dog. Also I have only ever seen this on black handled drivers..

I have some at work that are disintegrating. I will get a pic tomorrow. They just start to ooze oily stuff out, then chunks start to fall off.

Thanks, that is what it looked (from memory) like. I know in general the handles weren't a warranty item, but I thought I heard the 80's models may be an exception (never looked into it). Right now, I am trying to get some kind of kit together for my second truck, and I need jumper cables for both (friend was in state and left his lights on during a funeral).

i am just gonna say it.

my dad wanted to move the bass boat to the back yard with the ATV but the hole where you would attach a 2-5/16" ball was too small. instead of drilling it out he thought that putting the screw driver in it and attaching a vice grip to the bottom to secure it tight would do the job.

amazingly we got half way through the yard and he hit a large stick and the screw driver handle broke right off. he readjusted the vice grip again and pulled the boat once more with the handle broken off and parked it.

we are not talking about a 14' aluminum boat and trailer, we are talking about a professional ranger 519 anniversary edition bass boat with a 200hp fuel injected motor.

i'd say the snap on handles are TOUGH!

The Snap On plastic handles are not warrantied when they dissolve?

Why not?

I had a couple of black handles do that, turn chalky. I dropped one of them and the handle shattered like glass. I saved the blades to get new handles and ended up losing them somewhere.

The previous generation of plastic handled hammers do the same thing. And Snap-on WILL replace those if you send them in.

I totally agree with Snap-on's policy of not warranteeing handles of scewdrivers that sustain damage. But when it's 100% obvious that someone at Snap-on mixed the wrong stuff in their chemistry set, and a tool is crumbling in your hands, they damn well better replace it.

the black handles that eroded away smelled like vinegar for some reason. they dried out and fell apart in the drawer. no particular reason why. but you get a new one when that happens.
acid on the blade or the handle?????

No, But when I went to get the screwdriver to use it was not usable. Not real sure what happened to it or even when it was used last. Just frustrating that because its not "broke" its not warrantied. At least by this guy. Took me two weeks or so to find him and then I get this response. At least I know where Sears is.

Its the very tip of the blade. Here is a couple pictures. The metal tip is worn off or eaten off somehow.

Try to warranty it and give the results. Looks like it might be too abused in my opinion. At least tap the handle flush and see what happens. "Your" dealer may understand.

You should have broke the tip off in a vise. It works with my Snapon man!

Actually, I think you may even still be able to order the red ones in various sizes. You just won't get the ID markings of the particular screwdriver; all that will be printed on it is Snap-on. Have your Snap-on guy try that if you want some hard handles.

While you claim that happened suddenly, if you took a screwdriver and used it for 30 years, that's pretty much how it would look. Wear does not justify warrantee. Someone use this as a dipstick in a battery?

So I could certainly understand a dealer's reluctance to replace that. But if he knew you, and you had a good track record as a customer in terms of being a good customer, and not constantly bring in returns, (NOT like ME in other words!!!) he should replace the shaft, even if he has to eat it. Good customer support is essential to building a business.
