I was in the back room at sears today were they rebuild the ratchets and seen their "send back" bin of ratchets they dont rebuild, they get sent back and remade into new ratchets. The bin was FULL, maybe 100-150 ratchets, of -V- oil hole ratchets, flex heads, 1/4" - 1/2" drives

And you didn't even offer to root around in that bin and haul off some of their "trash"?:bounce:

Imagine how many could be made into good working ratchets from swapping parts.

I wonder if you might be able to strike a deal with them... find some newer yet broken Craftsman's (or pick some up at a flea and break them) and offer to exchange for some of the vintage ones?

Of coarse I offered :lol_hitti None of the returned ratchets can leave the building :(
Not surprised. "Corporate" entities tend to get very **** about their damaged/returned/discontinued inventory. I had a guy at Advance Auto Parts tell me the other day that their items on the clearance table start out at a certain discount price and are marked down in stages the longer they sit on clearance. Once the price reaches a certain "threshold", the item MUST be "disposed of" and can't be sold or given away to anyone, not even employees. He told me that people have been terminated for violating this policy.

I rooted around in a bin and couple tables at Kragen, and when they started ringing up, some items they wouldn't sell, and told me they have to be returned to corp etc.

Yup. In my case I wanted to buy a atv jack that kragen (o'reilly) had on clearance a few weeks ago for 50% off the original price. Since that sale ended they wanted to charge me full price for a product that is no longer in their inventory. Sales clerk was going to use the new product # to charge me. I did not buy since I already have a nice Craftsman aluminum atv jack. The kragen one was gonna be for the desert. Oh well.:(

There have been millions of examples of employees stealing items by claiming that they were junk, or had been on the clearance table too long. So that's why companies demand that such items are destroyed...to take away that excuse from thieving employees.

When I was a young service manager at Goodyear, we replaced tires under warranty, then tagged them and stored them until we got instructions on what to do with them from corporate offices. A few days later we would either ship them back to Goodyear, or be directed to cut the beads with bolt cutters, and throw them in our scrap tire pile. And if you did anything else with those tires after getting disposal instructions, it was automatic termination. But often tires had been replaced just to satisfy an irate customer, when there was nothing wrong with the tires at all. So now and then the warranty-replaced tires ended up on tech's personal cars. And, occasionally, someone would get caught, and fired immediately.

Plus with Craftsman the broken ratchet could later be exchanged for a new one. Understandable but sad none the less. :(
