Sad state

Was working at a plant today and saw this sitting in the recycle pile. Sadly there is no way to save it. There were also 5 overhead hoists of varying ages and brands. Most of them seemed easily repairable.

Typical for large corporations. Better kickback for the Mgr. that orders the replacement in stead of repairing and maintaining older equipment.

It's surely 3 phase. That weeds out all the hobby home shop guys. So off to the scrap pile it goes.

Remember, just like it's a huge pain in the *** for a big company to buy stuff, it's often an even bigger pain in the *** to sell stuff. Especially used **** that may have liability. Then they have to worry about sales tax and getting the potential buyers through security. Pretty soon they are way upside down on the $100 they can get for a rusty grinder.

Even worse is trying to sell it to the employees. Sure enough more than one guy wants it. Then no matter how democratic the process is to pick the "winner" someone is **** hurt. Pretty soon the scrap pile is looking pretty attractive.

This **** happens for a reason. It's also why I'm self employed.

Dad retired from a major corp in the days when scrap metal was a nuisance. No value. They paid people to haul it off. He got a lot of really cool aluminum pipe and racks.

I wish I could, however some guy is going to get paid by the hour to destroy it onsite. Then they will pay another guy to come get the remains. They wont even let me have the chain out of one of the hoists. The equipment was "tagged out", one hoist was tagged out 3 months ago for a bad limit switch. The Baldor has nothing wrong with it, they simply don't use it anymore as they onsite machine shop is idled. There will most likely be functional lathes, mills, and drill presses joining it soon. Even more sad is this is a plant in a struggling industry. A competing company just idled an entire site and laid off everyone, including my dad

I saw this at my last job before i became self-employed.They shut down the metal shop
And dumped a WWll era south bend lathe into the scrap dumpster, tooling and all.I asked
If I could buy it beforehand and the operations mgr. said no,insurance liability.I shed a tear that day

Our retired machines go on Govliquidation or Govdeals or to a salvage place. There used to be an employee salvage store but that went away.
