Hello my brother wants to take a small engine repair class, and he would also like to fix quads and snowmobiles. I have the snap on SOEX707 Wrench set that i don't use much cause i use metric on cars mostly. But for small engines and quads and stuff should he get SAE or should i tell him to buy good metric stuff

thank you
Jason

In my opinion, he really needs both. I worked in an outdoor power equipment shop from 1994-2001, and I used SAE most, but there was definitely a growing amount of metric. John Deere, Echo, and Honda equipment come to mind. I'm sure there's more metric now than there was then. I see you're in Canada, but here in the Northeastern US, it was very common for 20-30+ year old snowthrowers to come in for repair, and they were all SAE. I used USA Craftsman almost exclusively back then, aside from Snap On ratchets and ratcheting screwdriver.

I would say you will need both, make some pawn shop's, SAE is easy to pick up and with enough looking you can pick up some good USA metric at really good price's

I do heavy diesel work... Mostly just one manufacturer but they make engines that use both sae and metric fasteners, depending on the series of engines. I love my SOEX's but I use my mastercraft maximums just as often as they don't mark up the heads of bolts the way snap On's do

Small engines will be a mixed bag. Lots of metric in the newer stuff (as well as older overseas) and lots of SAE in the older stuff that just won't die.

Good sets of wrenches, 1/4" socket set, spark plug sockets, pliers (including oil filter pliers), feeler gauges, and screwdrivers (as well as torx & nut drivers) can knock out most of what he'll run into, as far as small engines go.

I would go with both. Sooner or later you will encounter a need for SAE so it's best to be prepared. You can't have too many tools.

I agree that he will need both. Especially with the small engines, you never know what you will run into.

As far ATVs go, Polaris uses a mix of SAE/metric fasteners. The other manufacturers use strictly metric.
