The other night my dad mention he would like a complete set of SAE wrenches. I checked his toolbox and yep he has a mix of everything and doesn't have a complete set of SAE or Metric. I own Craftsman Pro(SK) and Craftsman(RP) and never had any issues, but I know Craftsman quality has fallen a little. I want to buy a complete set for Christmas but I am not sure what to buy? He's a Chevy,John Deere guy so American Made would be nice. I would just buy Craftsman Pros but who knows how long those will be around for any warranty issues. What sears is doing to the Craftsman line just makes me mad....

Give me your thoughts please. oh and keep it civil please?

If you want to get him some very high quality wrenches, without spending a lot of money, go with Wright.

For just over $100, you can get a Wright 11pc. SAE set, 3/8" to 1", made in the USA from USA steel, and packaged in a made in the USA denim tool roll, made from USA denim. The model number you want is Wright 711, if you prefer full polish it would be 911, and slightly more expensive.

The equivalent size Snap-on set would be $200 used in decent shape, $300 used in near new shape, and $370 new.

There is a US made John Deere wrench line, I have them. Just make sure to say you want the USA one, there are full polish China ones also. I use them everyday in my road box fixing construction equipment, no complaints. Wright is more likely the better wrench and if you can find a better price, its a no brainer, but I bet a JD man would get a kick out of US made JD wrenches.

It ***** whats happening to the Craftsman line, but none of it bears repeating here. The raised panels are still a fantastic value. I use a recently purchased set of them on the job (aircraft maintenance) with zero complaints. SK, Armstrong and Wright would all be acceptable too.

Don't read too much into this site. Lots of people looking back thinking the raised pannel Craftsman were better in the past.....but it's all in their heads. Some Craftsman stuff has become lower quality....wrenches and sockets for instance are not on that list. IMHO they as good as ever and better made than 30 years ago. In fact the only ones that have given me any trouble are the old skinny handle ones. I've got a nice set of used Sk's uo to 1" I will sell for $40
