safe way to remove air hammer bits

is there a way to remove the air hammer bits without maiming myself

Are you referring to an air hammer/chisel with the 'beehive' type spring retainer?

I just unscrew the spring and pull the bit out.

if you mean the air hammer type with the bit or chisel held in by a spring . disconnect the airline first

^^X2. Use the tab at the bottom of the spring to unscrew it. If you just try gripping the spring to unscrew it, it will grab the threads tighter and make it more difficult.

I've never had a problem just pushing the spring to the side and popping the bit out that way. Maybe yours has a tighter spring?

I'll try unscrewing it. I just always assumed I had to twist and bend the spring from the top

To me seems like a solution to a non-existent problem. I just push the spring to the side and swap out bits lickety-split. I guess whatever works for you.
