This came to my notice at the house today. It is a recent development. I would like to make this go away safely and inexpensively.

Any product and/or methodology tips are appreciated.

I have one about the sieve of a half of a football. I have hit it twice now with wasp hornet spray at night. I haven't checked in a few days, so normal help here other than you can try it or call a pro.

In my neck of the woods, we wait until January and remove it safely. Since you are in Tennessee, your winter probably won't help you with the problem.

That's a big nest. I haven't ever let one get that big here. As far as taking care of the problem, I normally just knock them down. Sometimes I use wasp spray ahead of time. For a nest that size, you might consider in renting/purchasing some protective gear.

Vacuum at the entrance and then just wait. You'll **** the majority up, then knock it down and vacuum up any remaining.

Your right. Wait until winter. First thing after a night below freezing.

Which ever method you choose to get rid of it, be sure to make a video of the process.

You might end up with a sweet viral video.

I have heard of spray foam.

That's an interesting approach. Is there only one entrance to a nest like this and if you spray foam it will it seal it up? Do you wait until it cures and they die to knock it down? Wonder if there is any way they can chew their way out? Or do you pump so much in that it expands and "explodes" the nest?

hang on . . . . Do you have an air compressor or portable air tank ?

I posted this elsewhere and copied/pasted it here.

Yesterday, I went up stairs to find some hornets in the upstairs window, killed them only to more more in another room. Luckily I found a spot where they chewed through the drywall tape in the corner of my daughters bedroom. I found they were coming in through one of the gable end vents, like 10-12 at a time

I made a trip to town and bought some Sevin dust. I took a piece of brake line and duct taped it to an air nozzle, filled it with Sevin dust and blew it into the vent, three different times.

Result, didn't get stung and the hornets are dead today. There's not a one flying in or out.

Thanks to all, Great ideas. I'm off the hospital if I get stung, so I had the kid who cuts my grass soak it with some spray. We'll soak it again the next few days then smack it with a 2x4. I'll look into this Sevin stuff for next time - it sounds like serious stuff.

I'd definitely film whatever you do. It may end up as a YouTube featured video. I'm allergic to them so I'd probably let someone else do it. Nah. Too much fun to be had. I'd go for high pressure washer. Hope I could out run them. Seriously though. Don't get on a ladder. Do everything from the ground.

Vacuum cleaner didn't work too well on duck dynasty when they went for honey bee hive.

That's a nest right there!

Re: the Billy The Exterminator

I've seen he and his brother use this spray stuff against hornets/wasps countless times....something non-toxic (beyond the bees) and is made from the crushed leaves of chrysanthemums? I cann't recall the name exactly.

Their tactics seem to be to simply get close and spray it and the things die right then and there. Occasionally, I've seem them double team (one on the inside and and one on the outside for example) and somethimes they use protective gear, but more often than not, they don't. That spray seems to work well.

Cold will kill, or at least, slow them down.
If you get frost wait untill the AM after a frost night.
They are up in the corner because it is sheltered.
You can put a fan aimed at it to blow the cold air on it over night.
Then you can spray if you like, but I have been able to just scrape the paper away.
If you have someone standing by with a shop vac they can get all the paper and any bugs.
Then just to be safe, I spray into the vac tank.

I discovered quite by accident that gunk engine degreaser stops them dead in thier tracks. Maybe you could get a straw thing on the nozzle, poke it through to the inside and fill it up!

Did a drive by hit on one of those over my shop door. I can't move fast so I drove my beater van up to it and hit it with some wasp and hornet spray then rolled up the window and backed out of there. after a while when I didn't see any more activity I just hosed it off the building with a water hose. Then I ran over it with the van to make sure.
