I buy 'em by the dozen at Harbor Freight. They have a couple of different types.

Someone will be along any second now to tell me "you'll put your eye out, kid".

I wear Harley Davidson's. They are large, and wrap around without having to wear side shields. Through Uline, they are like $17 each now, but at the time I paid like $14, or I should say the shop did. I have like 7 or 8 pairs in my toolboxes, on my shelves, and in my cabinets, so I always have a pair handy. Plus the wife knows where to grab a pair at when she needs one.

Any good input on prescription safety glasses?

I wear On-guard metal frame safety glasses 24/7. Progressive lenses, high index, removeable side shields. The reason for this is that my work and hobbies are both chip producing and dangerous, and I don't have to switch glasses for any occasion.

Clear 3Ms from Enco, I order a dozen when they're $1.30 to $1.40/pr and there's a discount code. I've gotten them as cheap as .70/pr from Traver's or Rutland (now MSC) on random sales, but it's been years.

Mark-up on these can be huge, I've seen the same thing at HD for $5 or $6 each.

Whatever work is supplying...usually the cheap 3Ms.

UVEX and Jackson Safety also make great safety glasses.

For prescription you have some other options, talk to your eye doc. Our work supplies Wiley X with prescription lenses if you need them.

RJ,

Thanks for the lead. Will be looking into these.

Got mine at Lenscrafters. Also have transition lenses, although not sure you can still do that in some situations. Company owner had to write permission for me before the optician would do Transitions for safety glasses. They will not put street lenses in safety frames due to liability.

Snap-On, simply because they offer them with built-in ear plugs and they're cheap as well.

Same here with On-Guard and I wear them daily, can't say 27/7 tho I am only human and need sleep :D Prescription safety glasses are all I wear now, when for work/needed a pair with sides, and a pair without sides when not needed. Have couple pairs with polycarbonate transitions lenses and a couple with polycarbonate lenses.

UVEX TOMCAT.

A modern faceshield & good pair of spoggles/goggles should be on hand as well for when glasses don't cut it.

I keep a handful of spares for helpers.

Not sure why your optician needed to put in "street lenses" for them to be transitions , all my transitions safety glasses are and have been ANSI Z87-Approved and OSHA-compliant.

I just picked up a set of On Guard Rx frames on eBay for $12 and took them down to the store for lenses, I guess I'll let you know how they do in a week when I get them back.

How do you like yours with transition lenses Occupant? I snooped around online before buying Rx frames and someone else said they were concerned the transitions would act weird around machinery and shop lighting. I've never been interested in getting them even on my regular glasses but you piqued my interest.

One thing to remember about safety glasses....they may not always be suitable for the job. I'm a big pusher for safety glasses today, BUT.......90% of the time that I got metal in my eye, and it was a weekly thing where I worked years ago, and even my last job I had for 30+ years, I got the metal in my eye while wearing safety glasses. The metal would bounce off the back of the lens and into my eye.

No don't take that as one shouldn't wear safety glasses. Things are dependent on what you do. Sometimes, safety goggles would be a better bet, and other times a face shield with safety glasses combined would be better.

Our safety dept regards safety glasses as secondary protection. Whenever I'm grinding, polishing, removing/installing snap rings or other hazardous operations, I wear a faceshield as primary protection to give a lot more coverage.

Also back when I was doing a lot of weedeating as part of my job, I had a nice tinted faceshield for face protection. Sure made an unpleasant task a lot more pleasant- rocks and grass bounced off the faceshield instead of under my safety glasses or smacking me in the face.

At my work we have to wear safety glasses in the hangars around the aircraft. Im in a lucky position that I can get as many pairs as I want and a few have ended up in my garage. :)

X2, mine are progressive and ANSI Z87 compliant. They even have the bifocals on top or bottom and still compliant.

Yes getting old *****

Let me clarify. I liked the safety frames, but wanted standard lenses in one for a daily wear pair away from work. They would not put any type of non-safety lens in a safety frame. The ones I wear are fully compliant.

Do any of you guys have cases for safety glasses? Im mostly interested in transporting them to the shooting range without them getting scratched up by all the other stuff in the range bag. Recommedations?

Motocross goggles (safety glasses got metal in my eyes too many times).

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/35484/i/scott-recoil-sand-dust-goggles

Have had MX bikes for years, been wearing Scott goggles.

Putting on metal roofing on an old chicken coup building 24x22 or so, had to cut every sheet, with safety glasses threw metal behind the (same type of eye pictured on here).

With my motocross goggles (NONE) got in my eyes. Working in the shop at work (Yamaha/Kawasaki) most everyone wears MX goggles.

Obviously I think this depends on if you have specific needs, but I switched over to 3M Tekk awhile back and don't see me switching back to anything else. If I need more protection I wear a full face shield.

The price is crazy cheap at Amazon, usually $2-3 each, and they are the first glasses I've ever found that are so light and fit so well I don't mind wearing them because I forget I'm wearing them. Obviously YMMV, but for a couple of bucks I think it's worth a shot. They do sell them in a few of different tint options too.
