Safety Questions-Fishing Wire Along Ceiling

I'm a safety conscious homeowner who understands electricity basics.

Attached 2-car garage. I prefer the finished drywall look, not the EMT or MC look.

I successfully fished a run of Romex for a ceiling fan about 15 feet distance. The wire runs parallel to the floor joists and is now laying along the top side of the ceiling drywall under the insulation.

New construction would have fastened the wire along the side of the floor joists, but short of removing the section of drywall I can't fasten the wire to the joist.

Is it acceptable to leave the wire this way?

Is there some "old work" way of protecting the wire from a future homeowner who doesn't know it's there?

The NEC has exceptions for fishing cable in old concealed work such as what you have.
Just make sure you use the proper outlet box specifically designed and UL approved for ceiling fan application you are installing.
