So I just read through the safety thread & it got me thinking about how beat up my work boots are. I work in an auto shop so besides safety toes the main thing is spill resistance. I prefer shoes for the light weight but wouldn't count boots out. I tried going to redwing when I bought the last pair but the few pairs I tried on didn't seem very comfortable & the salesman was a jerk so I went with the old fallback timberland pro. They're always comfortable & I get about a year out of them but they're really heavy & my feet hurt once they start wearing out.
I'm looking for something light, comfortable & hopefully not too expensive.

Redbacks been wearing them for the past 20 years (not the same pair. They are low cut and slip on all day comfort on concrete floors. Usually the Cornwell and Matco dealers carry them sizing is different than American sizing I have also ordered them online with no issues.

these lasted me about a year, lightweight and your feet can breathe in them. I regret going with a different one last time I got steel toes.

+1 Redbacks are fantastic safety shoes. Made in Australia. I get them from my Snap On guy. I wear style USBBKSC. Can't say enough good things about Redbacks!

Thorogoods are awesome. I'm a construction worker so my feet are in boots all day (metatarsals). But my boots for home and jeep trips are thorogoods they are comfortable, affordable, and union made in the USA
Mine are a composite safety toe.

Another you may want to take a look at are new balance if they still make them. They are a safety toe or mer guard boot made for MLB umpires I had a set a few years back. More like a shoe than a boot and used them at work when I wasn't in extreme heat. They were light and comfortable. Compare safety toe not steel. Much nicer in winter. When I had them they were made in the USa also.

I'll have to check out the new balance store up the street. Always liked their shoes. I was thinking about keens too. Wish there was a local seller. Anyone know how the sizes run? I'd hate to buy something & not like it. I'll look into the other ones too.

Im really into wearing quality shoes and am suprised to see a couple posts mentioning brands i was going to highly recommend.ill remind you im high on putting quality shoes on my feet! With that i would suggest either red back or keen.i wear both and they are top notch shoes.i wear a few more keen styles and mainly just a work style in red back.either brand you'll be happy and they'll last.

I have a pair of exact Keens pictured, and have been very pleased. Very tough but also breathable, and soles provide good traction.

If you can live with a boot Dakota Ironworkers are very comfy and with no lining they breath. #1 son is boilermaker and been wearing them for 10 years,,a new pair each year...I wear Blundstones,,they are comfy sitting down,,you would not want to be on your feet all day in them.

I'm not a big fan of them, but several guys at work have the safety toe Keens and really like them.

I stick with Redwing and they outlast the Keens by a long shot, but they are heavier, cost more, and take time to break in to where they're comfortable. One of my coworkers just finally threw out a pair of Redwings he's been wearing for over 15 years. My oldest pair is going on four years and shows nothing worse than minor scuffs.

Since everyone's feet are different I think you should just shop around and see what shoe fits your foot the best. I keep hearing good things about Keen but the last few times I went to look for work and hiking boots I could not find a style that fit my feet very well.

Good point. Amazon has no-cost return. I have a work budget for shoes that I still havent used for 2016. If these dont work I will get another UPS Redwing pair. These Keen look lighter, which is hard to find with the durability found in the reviews I read. The Bates I tried were superlight, but wore out too fast. The Redwings last......are heavy.

Boots should be replaced annually. Guys on here saying the wear boots or work shoes for 4 years, 5 years, 15 years. Your not doing you back, hips and knees any favors by being a cheap ***

Because? The shoe industry needs more business?

Shoes can be resoled as long as the uppers are in good condition.

I have been using Wolverine Raider 8" Steel Toe Boots for over 5 yrs now. They last me 6-8months depending on how badly I am abusing them. I am normally climbing on lug nuts on heavy trucks and walking/standing on diesel engines and concrete so.... They deal with everything very well. Brake fluid and really strong hand soap destroy them unless you wipe it off. (just like every other real leather boot) Takes 2-7 days to break in and once broken in feel like sneakers. I absolutely love these boots. They have electrical hazard and steel toe. They are light when compared to most boots. The steel toe is also wider then most so you do not get that rub or pinch from it.

I agree if you are not getting your boots replaced/rebuilt at least once a year you are hurting yourself.

It's not the soles that are the problem. It's the uppers, or more specifically, the support the uppers provide. Very few people walk perfectly flat on their feet, with their feet, ankles, and calves in perfect alignment. Most either walk on the outer edge or inner edge of the soles. This wears the soles at an angle, and also sideloads, if you will, the uppers to the point where they offer no support to your ankles and don't support your foot in the proper position. Picture weight constantly.pushing sideways against the leather. It will eventually stay off to the side. And honestly, it's podiatrists that often recommend replacing your footwear to prevent misalignment from causing issues further up your skeleton. I saw a podiatrist who told me I should replace my boots every 6 months!

The arch and foot support collapses. Some of this depends on the construction but most shoes that are natural leather also benefit from 24 hours to breathe out between wearings, this will greatly then enhance the upper's longevity. The exact life of any shoe will be a factor of days worn and the harshness of use. But a full year is 250 business days and thats alot of work. A guy wearing the shoes 1x a week for a year is only wearing them 50 days--alot easier to get 5 years out of that shoe. Also if you rotate two pairs you only may do 120 per each and more easily get longer interval out of the shoe that way.

Funny, I just purchased a pair of those today. They last me about a year at work and much more comfortable than boots. I spent twenty years in an auto shop and wore Red Wings for the majority of that time. I think working on cars requires leather boots because of the spills that happen. When I started my new job everyone was wearing some sort of shoe/hiking boot. I tried these keens and fell in love. The ones I purchased today will be for home and after my work shoes are one year old (six months from now)I intend to rotate them into work shoes and continue the cycle.

If Merrell made steel/safety toes I'd buy them in a heart beat. I own multiple pair of Merrell hiking boots. One for work, one for landscaping and one good pair. Which will eventually end up as my landscaping pair...

I know you ditched Tim pros but I love mine. I just count on the fact that they're a once a year investment...kinda like buying tires for your feet.

Podiatrists—faugh. Six months of following a podiatrist's advice left me barely able to walk. As soon as I ditched the orthotics my legs and ankles got a lot better. It's one thing to protect your feet. It's quite another to surround then with bracing that does the job your bones and muscles are supposed to do.

First off, buying $350 boots hardly makes me a cheap ***. I bought the best quality Redwings they make, and they haven't deteriorated at all after several years. The soles show only the slightest wear. They are more comfortable now than when they were new, which I've found to be true with almost all quality, leather boots...they break in and stay the same for a long time if you take care of them.

Rotating pairs so you don't wear them two days in a row helps them dry out, and is definitely a good idea.

Further, no two people have the same feet, and some folks don't like, or need springy footbeds, additional arch support, etc. When I was in the military I wore two pairs of jungle boots alternating every other day for the better part of 6 years. I kept winter boots in the truck for any extended time outside in cold weather. They had soles that were hard as a rock, had steel inserts, zero cushion anywhere, and my feet loved them. When I finally threw them out they soles were worn nearly smooth.

A coworker of mine just threw out a pair of Redwings he had for longer than he was able to remember....but it was over 12 years (before he started his current job). He went right out and bought the new version of the same boot because he swears nothing has ever felt better on his feet. He kept agonizing over throwing them out because he said they were still comfortable.

On the flip side, another coworker has bought three pairs of the cheapest Redwing safety toe shoes they make in three years because they fall apart.

So, some of us spend money on the boots we like, don't replace them very often, and our feet, knees and backs are just fine. I guess we just buy quality stuff that doesn't fall apart like some cheap asses do.

My job is to inspect for QC problems in a very big factory and that involves a lot of walking.. because of that I go for the lightest shoe I can get. Last years dewalt trainer steel toe weighed in at 850 grams each.. this years are 450 each.. Massive difference when you're walking miles everyday.

However my previous job was as a welder where I stood at various welding jigs and tables for 8 hours and hardly moved.. for that job I wore very heavy steel capped boots with rubber over toes and spats to stop the hot stuff getting through the laces.. guess it's what you are doing that chooses the boot for you..

three years ago I had a pair of Doc Martins they were the most comfortable thing I've ever had on my feet.. lasted two days. Airwear soles are not the thing for a wood shop with screws everywhere..

My next pair will be Aimont coming in at 430 grams.. they are ugly but light and meet all standards needed here in the UK..

Yes in the event you can find a cobbler in your area to actually do it. That's a dying trade. And they are not infinitely resolable you can once maybe twice. In my occupation thr upper oart ofnthr boot is trashed in a year. Regardless wearing boots with hr same soles for more than a year is horrible on your back, hips and knees.

Your preaching to the choir dude. I buy good footwear. Always have but as many other have said here the boots break down. The sole, arch, and upper break down you lose ankle support and yourbsoles wear even if you think they haven't THEY HAVE. Throw that name redwing around all you want. Do you know what "redwing" is these days? Well over half is Chinese built garbage. So if you spend $350 that doent make the boot last any longer than my $220 throrogoods or my $250 american made Carolina 505's . (I dont pay those prices for either of these because i shop around and buy them on sale) so yeah if your bragging about spending $350 every 5 years + cuz "I bought me some fancy boots" your still a cheap ***, your still hurting your back, hips, and knees. Dont believe me talk to a doctor. You may not feel it yet but you will eventually.

Anyone tried this
http://m.keenfootwear.com/product/shoes/men/braddock-low
Or this
http://m.keenfootwear.com/product/shoes/men/omaha-wp
? I went to a local shop that has the Detroit low & a 6" leather boot that I liked because it looks more spill resistant. They also have a nice looking cat shoe. Anyone have experience with them? I honestly thought they were a cheaper brand like dewalt but apparently not. Nice guy & prices aren't too far off amazon. I'd be glad to spend an extra $10 or 20 to support a local business. I'm curious about the ones I linked to because they look like they have a more concrete friendly sole.
