Post i just read on safe wiring caused me to post this.1st i am no electrician, bout hardest thing ive done electricity wise in shop is wire ballests after much of your help.[turned out fine].I just came from a friends house, while in his shop he had large compressor 10 ft from panel on wall.Insted of having it wired directly to box,he has orange wire looks to be one size larger then my drop light wire from little box on compressor to 240 outlet on wall.Plug and outlet didnt match so he removed plug and hooked wires to like color wires in outlet box and reinstalled plug back in wall.all this is connected to screws with those little U shaped **** connectors that you crimp.Dont know if this is a problem but it looked scary to me.Mine i had an electrician hook up to panel and it done in cable covered wire.Just scared me to look at but says been working fine for 3 years.Imight be worring for him to much but especially the **** connectors dont appear to be safe to me.What ya,ll think?

It's definitely not to code. And if the crimp connectors are the ones you buy from the autoparts store that's not good. May work fine, but it's not safe based on what you're describing.
