Salt in water heater?

Didn't see a plumbing forum here.

When i drained my water heater, in addition to what seemed to be a relativey minimal amount of debris/rust, there appeared to be undesolved salt crystals. One guy at the plumbing supply house said the filter could be cracked and salt crystals were finding their way from the water softener to the water heater. Another guys said 'nope', salt crystals cannot make it from the water softener to the water heater, but rather, what I saw ws calcification or whatever.

Would calcification crud come out with a similar apperance to salt crystals?
If somehow it was salt fromt the softener I would think that my faucets would have been starting to clog also.

Short version: Can salt make its way to the heater? or Would calcification crud just seem to resemble WS salt crystals?

BTW, is there a favorirte coice in WS salt brand/type?

Not going to be salt from the water softener.

The calcified stuff I removed from a water heater last year wasn't anything like salt crystals though.

Pictures?

Probably just crud from the anode rod dissolving. Have you ever replaced it?

For salt, we use Morton Clean & Protect Pellets from Sam's Club. Home Depot has it too but Sam's has the best price around here. $6.59 vs $8.97 per 44# bag.

Well water in our general area is hard, and whenever I replace a lower heating element due to failure (usually because of it), I have a bent piece of thin wall pvc pipe that is angle cut on the end and notched to vacuum the calcification out of the bottom of the water heater through the element hole. It looks like whitish corn flakes. It is not unusual to get a pint volume or more out of one.
