Hello guys,
I found the forum after extensive internet research on the subject of garage construction. My wife and I should start building our new home soon and the deal was she can do whatever she wants with the main floors while the garage is entirely mine and mine only :D

I hope I can get some ideas from you and share the building process as you surely will see some construction techniques that may be particular to our local workforce. I found some very unique building practices in some of the construction threads here. Many of them I'd like to study further even though I'm afraid people here may have never heard about these.

Btw, am I the only foreigner you guys have in here? I'm under the impression that as you all folks are located in US I may be something of an oddity :D:D

Thanks!!

As for you being an oddity, I don't know you so I can't comment on that... ;) But there are people from all over the world on this forum.

Rod: i can't say i know of many members from Brazil or South America, but there are guys and gals all over the world that i talk back and forth with daily so you are not alone.

care to share the size of your new garage? may i suggest that the Garage Journal member's maybe only answer is to build it as big as you can afford and work down from there. yes there are a ton of threads on amazing garages and tools and i usually hang in the old tools areas and more specifically vises, tool boxes and hand tools.

do you have any pictures of a few of the cool pictures from your area to post on your thread here so you can practice posting pictures which we all love in our posts? also are you close to the new golf course they are building for the 2016 Olympics?

cheers and welcome

Thank you guys.

I live in the very south of Brazil, almost Argentina. I lived until some months ago in Porto Alegre, the state capital. It was indeed one of the hosting cities of the World Cup. It won't host any olympics game though.

I moved recently to a very tiny town (23k residents) in the mountains where we gonna start building in April. It is surrounded by gorgeous roads among mountains passes where land prices are usually lower than those in bigger urban areas.

I am following your general advice regarding garage size which is almost as much as I can afford. Don't expect that much though because I saw some astonishing builds here.

I don't have pics of the plant, only a rendering of the exterior. The entire area is 800 sq meter but the house itself shown below is 280 sqm only. As the bottom floor is the garage you can divide 280 by 3 to get an approximate size.

There's a small cover designed for quick parking of the daily drive car and the closed space will fit something close to 4 Minis side by side (or two sedans with open doors) I believe. It is not big and will be even less considering that I want to move there my scotch bottles, cigar umidor, turn table, analog amplifiers, records and a working desk for eventual home-office purposes. It sounds tide but the two cars that should sleep inside are unbelievable small :lol:

I plan to build someday in the back of the area an additional two car shop with a guest sleeping room on top. But that's for another day

Rod: it's not required to say, but what do you do for a living? that looks like an awesome view, but maybe a few wild critters might end up on your doorstep daily.

i'm guessing 280 meters is about 1000 square feet so about a 30 x 30 foot garage and a 2000 square foot living area. the cigar and scotch (i'd like a good beer or Vodka) sounds nice and i do like your carport too.

nice to see you figured out the pictures and feel free to ask questions if you have any on how to use the forum. also ask questions on what you might be looking to find answers to if you do some searching and cant find any because we might be able to give you a link to a few good threads.

again welcome to our group and PM (private message) me if you don't see a response to a question you posted her if it's been a couple days or if you just have a quick question.

good luck with your build and since building is a bit different where you are please start a thread maybe in the garage gallery so others can learn how to build in Brazil. do you need permits and are there utilities?

cheers

I'm a computer engineer. We have an office in Philly. Now and then I fly to US and get to do some shopping (our cost of living nowadays is ridiculously expensive thanks to our current gov!!).

I'm renting an apartment nearby to be closer to the bulding site and the first thing I notice was indeed the variety of bugs trying to fly in late in the night. I didn't have that in the city

It will not be a square garage but I'd say you're more or less correct. Maybe something like 35 x 25.

I didn't get your last question. You mean construction permits? In here you cannot simply build something in any way you want. There are regional codes, city codes and everything must be signed by an architect of engineer to ensure we have professional compliance of the other codes we regular people never heard of.

I'm building inside of a private residential condominium. Some of the permits were already issued to the original seller. When the guy who bought the area started everything he faced several problems with local authority trying to get environmental licenses. I remember that in the end he had to buy a separate green area and re-plant every single tree he'd be chopping off in our area. Environmental licenses here are becoming harder and harder to get.

Rod: yes when i asked about permits i was wondering if you needed a construction or building permit. hard to believe you are in a community with that view and maybe all the better if you have some good neighbors.

it also sounds like the planners from the big cities of the US moved to Brazil when you mention replacing trees and all the environmental permits.

if you do start a build thread maybe in the garage gallery make sure to put the link in your signature so when you are asking questions and posting answers on other threads you can get other members to go check out your thread and maybe help you there.

one of my favorite golfers (Ernie Els) has had SAP on his golf hat for years so i have heard of your company.

good luck and when are you thinking of starting the foundation and building? take plenty of before, during and after pictures so you'll have them and maybe have a few to share with us.
