So getting started on building a new barn. The idea right now is a Dutch Style Post and Beam barn. Size will be 36'x54', with 10' side walls. Hoping to do a loft around the outside, and maybe at the rear. Roof will be a 10/12 pitch.

Starting to clear the land to where it will go. The idea I had was to create the driveway on the property line, so as to disturb as little of the grass as possible. Thinking about using Turfstone for the front portion that would go through the yard, then use either slag or crusher run for the rest of the driveway

Pic from the street showing where I started clearing for the driveway. I have 3 stumps that I need to remove up front.

I am going to cut down the smaller trees first, and cut up for firewood. For the larger trees, I am going to have a local guy with a portable sawmill cut up to use for the barn. Originally, I was going to use the wood for the main beams of the H frame bents, that would be 8x8x18, but given the number and size of trees, I am probably going to get those from a sawmill, and use the trees on the land for the 4x4s and 4x6s for the side walls.

Not to get to personal, but the build was put on hold, as my son was born about 2 weeks after this last post. He had quite a few medical problems, had to be resuscitated at birth, spent time in NICU, as well as constant medical issues. He needed to have physical therapy once a week starting at 6 months due to all of this. The concern at the time was that he had cerebral palsy. In march of last year, he was diagnosed with a rare chromosome disease. And when I say rare, he is only the 2nd known case in the world. Since the diagnosis, his physical therapy has stepped up to twice a week. No that he is doing better, and I have most of his medical bills paid off, I am strating back where I left off.

So here is "day 2" of starting to clear the area out and put a driveway in. It started to rain during, which slowed me down a little.

Here is the driveway. Went with slag. Was a tossup between slag and crusher run. Slag was about $100 cheaper a load. Still wasn't sure, but up the road, a guy had some laid for his driveway, so I could check it out. I thought it was suitable for what I needed.

Here is the pad. It has some fill, which I am a little nervous about. Ground seems a little spongy at the moment. The guy that did the grading said that it should pack down more after a few months. Debating whether I want to bring in a trench compactor, or just do piers under the slab. I am open to suggestions/tips from everyone.

Today, I came to kick *** and fell trees. There are still a lot of trees to fell.

I have cut down close to 20 so far, and it looks like I haven't done anything.

And for the record, that large pile of logs was the work of my wife helping me out.

Some progress from the past week. The original place I was going to put the barn wasn't going to work out. The size would put the sloped driveway right at the front door, and there was no area to turn around. Solution was to clear out the area I was going to take the trees from, and dig out and level. That would leave the previous area for the barn available for a flat area in front for turn around, etc.

Now need to figure out what to do with the trees. Current quote from the sawmill is $100/hr to have a truck come pick them up. Or a grading hauling company that charges $150/load. Sawmill is $.25/bdft to saw. Or a bandsaw sawmill that is ~$2200
