My dad gave me this vise not that long ago. It had been sitting at his place after he bought it at an auction, said he paid 8 bucks for it with some other stuff he wanted.

Does anyone know any info about this vise? I am going to try to get some better pictures of it tonight.

Samson was the trade name for Sears vises before they began using the Craftsman name. All the Samson vises I've seen appear to match the Rock Island vises of the time, so I assume that's who was making them.

Eric: I'm pretty sure the Sampson vises are also in the early Craftsman catalogs that might be on a few threads in the forum. I agree with B100 (very seldom if ever disagree with him) that Rock Island was the company that made your vise.

if you can't find any of the Craftsman catalogs i'll try to take a peak at some of mine if you need any help.

nice vise and nice story.

Eric: i just checked Outlaw's craftsman vise catalog thread and in his first post of the 1925 catalog there is a Sampson vise. it's not the #5218 that yours is so maybe yours is a little newer. i didn't see it in my 1931 Craftsman catalog I have saved to my computer so i'm guessing your Samson vise is late 1920's.

here's the link to the Craftsman thread so you can start your search and if you find a catalog with your Samson in it please post the page or the link here on your thread.

My dad told me a little more about this vise last night. It was my mom's great uncle's vise, so my great great uncle. He worked on the old ford Model T's and Model A's and so on. My grandpa was the one who bid my dad up to 8 bucks, or there is no telling how cheap he would have gotten it for.
