San Diego Upgrading 100 Amp

Hello,

I have a detached garage sitting out in front of property with house sitting behind off to side. Right know there is 100 amp service coming from overhead distribution to house service panel located outside. This is in San Diego, how possible is it to have SDGE run a separate 100 amp feed straight to garage with 2 meters for property. That would be the best option.

Otherwise, I'll have to upgrade at house but that service panel will need to be replaced to handle 200 amps and then run 100 amp out to garage.

Thanks,
Phillip

GJ Sparkies will need MORE INFO to give you best advice:

a) How FAR from house to garage ?
b) What is REAL Electric loads you intend for garage ? What loads in house ?
(Often never really NEED 100A but it's nice to have . . . 50A or 60A often will do.)
c) What is the minimum monthly bill (ie billing charge) that you'll be paying PoCo for that 2nd meter?
d) Isn't your panel in San Diego likely on outside of house? . . . so upgrade (if necessary) wouldn't be all that bad and could just run buried power over to the detached garage. Post up PIC's of main panel (cover on and cover off).

Doubt that you will get a 2nd meter to a residential lot, a larger service is another option, or there may a loophole that would allow a 2nd meter.

100a service has 12 circuit breakers in use with no room to expand. We just purchased the house last week. All our stuff is in storage at the moment so not really confident on total load we'll place but; 220 V Dry, Gas range, Gas Water heater, Gas Furnace. Will probably add AC this winter?

In Garage 5hp Champion compressor 1 phase, welders...son and I work on motorcycles together so there's often 2 different pieces of equip running at same time.

Electrician stopped by this afternoon to survey it and will have to replace the panel for 200a unless SDGE would install 100a metered in garage. Hopefully I'll hear back on cost if I need to go that route.

Are you planning on doing any of the electrical work yourself?
If you are, Electrical Supplies Unlimited (858) 558-2850 ON Nancy Ridge Road is where I would go for materials. But it is hard to beat Home Depot and thier 10% Military discount.

In my limited experience, SDG&E will do nothing without you having a building permit from whoever is your local agency having juristiction . In my case, it is Coronado, and I found the building permit office very cooperative ( as long as you respect their rules ).
