San Francisco is not known for its abundance of garage space and while looking I had a must have criteria of at least a one car garage. Got very lucky and ended up with a double tandem, it’s not flat but it can fit 4 cars.

Here it is on moving day some six years ago.

And a video to get a better idea of the space.

Decided to run shelves down the middle and dedicate the left rear to shop space.

Installed 3 8ft T8 lamps in the shop space and built a workbench that would accommodate stacked milk crates on the shelf as well as tie into the one metal lab cabinet a friend gave me. A look at the lower shelf will give an idea of how much slope there is to the floor. I put the tool box on leveling feet as casters were just not working.

Before getting to the heater, the work bench had to be put to some use.

Built this bike for the Giro d'California. 1960 Wards Riverside (Benelli), was trying to sell it off as a project and had no takers so finally got around to rebuilding the engine. Took 3rd place, sold the bike, went home with an empty truck.

Kind of miss that bike.

Took a peek at your web link. First time I have seen printed parts for sale. Intriguing.

Most of the 3D printing hype is just that, it will never compete with mass produced items for cost. But the price has come down to the point where some low volume parts can at least make it to market. Most the items are things I needed myself, so the design was a sunk cost. Margins are super thin and it would never pay if design time was factored in.

I fell into the trap of thinking the space was limitless and went about picking up many of the vehicles I've always wanted, and even a few others. Then got rid of a few. Currently sitting at two cars, two motorcycles, and ten scooters.

Behind the bugeye is the old gravity furnace and water heater.

I try and keep a check on the hoarding with a ratio of running to non-running. Historically I've found it really hard to have more than 3 running vehicles, regardless of how many I had.

Right now it's 11:3, so that's pretty good.

The gravity furnace had been installed in the '40s I think and the ducting was all wrapped with asbestos. The thing was a monster and the ducts also got in the way. The asbestos was also in bad shape. Having an ignition source in the garage also worried me and several times I would wake in the middle of the night worried that I'd not turned the fuel off on the Lambretta.

It had to go but money was tight when we moved in. Finally got to it after 3 winters of research and worry.

There's no need for AC here and natural gas is less expensive than electricity, so this removed a heat pump from the list, even though I find them the most elegant solution.

I went with a tankless water heater that also feeds a hydronic furnace. The water heater is the only heat source and the furnace is basically just a heat exchanger. Had wanted to mount the water heater on the outside wall but it was too close to the property line, so more plumbing inside than I wanted but still rather tidy.

Nice find on the garage -- seems like a huge space in SF -- and I have to give a (very biased) thumbs up for the Bugeye as well. :)

Thanks!

The beemer was a year long search, passing on many, till we found just the right one. It's been a great car!

The bugeye, well, that was me after two beers saying "you have a bugeye for sale? I'll take it." It's a bigger project than I have space for at the moment, but I've wanted one since I was 5 so I'll stick with it.

A four post lift will make it all workable, at least that's what I keep telling myself.

A friend of mine gave me a mini mill and lathe when he upgraded and while this was great and very much needed it was chewing up way too much bench space. I made a small 8" deep shelf along the wall and moved the lathe and grinder over to it.

Today I tackled a project that was technically beyond the envelope of the little machines, came out better than I had hoped.

Work has kept me from having any time to work in or on the garage but finally had some progress this last few weeks.

The windows on either side of the garage were broken and boarded up when we bought the place. Back in December I had someone out to see about replacing them and the finally got installed this last week. Also had a new fire door put in between the garage and the entryway.

Went with a keyless deadbolt on the door allowing me to quickly bolt it on the way out (and therefor actually bother to bolt it). Also went with a lever instead of a knob so I could open it with my elbow while retrieving wine from the cellar. Both features are working out as planned.

Now to do some cleaning, or maybe retrieve another bottle...
