Can I get away with 10-2? How about a 20 breaker? I have both.

The gallon rating means nothing for circuit wiring.

Its the motor HP rating that determines the circuit size.

So 3HP motor needs #12 THWN in pipe or 10/2 NM-b.

A 20a breaker may or may not hold. If it nuissance trips, you can use a 30a.

You will also need a disconnect if the comp is not within sight of and further than 50' away from the breaker panel.

The 6-50 wouldnt bother me, if you have the 10 wire go for it. Modern breakers are pretty sturdy, it might work on a 20,, worse thing it trips, if I had a 30 wouldnt be scared to use it especially with a heavy wire. Not really for the wire but trips, good service and big wire lesss them really pull on starts especially if they are close to the source.

30a breaker is the same price or sometimes even cheaper that a 20. Why put a marginal sized breaker in? Code would allow up to a 40 maybe even 50a breaker.

30A breaker would be my choice.

My well is 3 hp. A 20 worked for about 10 years, then every once in a while, once a year or so would trip. Not sure if it was breaker or equipment but hasnt done it with 10 more yrs on a 30.
I see a couple well instalations with fuses,, 12 wire with 30.

#12 thhn or #10 Romex can be used with any of the breaker sized listed in a motor circuit.

3HP well? That must be a deep well.

Not necessarily depth but also flow.

2-3hp isn't really uncommon. A lot of hog buildings have pumps this size.

Biggest private well pump I've wired on was 15hp at a big feed lot, had two of them. Back when they were run by pressure switch and starters they used an old railroad tanker for a pressure tank. 5 years ago or so they got VFD's and pressure transducers. Now they use a 60 gallon or so pressure tank. I think the water line comming out of the well casing is 2-3?"

Its 320 with pump at 220 or so and makes close to 35 gpm. I have a 301 or 351 well x trol tank on it. 1 1/4 pipe on it, they actually used 1 1/2 coming up hole.
