Newbie here, I have just purchased a used Sanborn, model # 5M-60V. It is a 60 gallon, 2 stage, 5hp, 200 psi unit. I'd really like to get a copy of the owners manual. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

I think 200psi is the tank test pressure. Even high end units typically fill the tank to 175. I see 175 on that label.

Ok, right, still, looking for owners manual...
Thanks.
Did you google? The first hit I got for Sanborn compressor parts, said they had owners manuals. I think Sanborn might be Coleman now. What information are you looking for? A lot of people here are very knowledgeable about compressors.

Yes, extensively, nothing for this model, the parts breakdown for the models I did find look different. I was hoping to stumble across someone with the same model.

At a minimum, I'd like to know what oil they recommend, and how much. But all things owner related I'd like to have at my finger tips.

I called there, thanks! I got some info, but still not enough. Nobody seems to have an owners manual.
See if the folks at Green Valley can tell you if Sanborn actually made the pump. If not, you may be able to get some pump literature from the manufacturer. That should cover most of what you want to know. Does the pump have any ID marks that would suggest it was not made by Sanborn

They should be able to. My single stage has 8 head bolts which is what they say determines that it is a Sanborn. They don't show the 2 stage pump but they should be able to tell OP how to verify.

Tank has a tag stamped 1985, there's the sticker on posted, and it says "Ajax corporation rochester NY", they don't exist anymore either.

Green Valley couldn't help at all with the manual. I'll post a picture of the cylinders when I get home.

Ajax and Acme, two names that never instill confidence.;) Good luck with your search. Be sure to ask them about oil; though.

So what's the theory behind 2 different sized cylinders?

Low pressure cylinder takes in atmospheric air, compresses it to about 40-50 psi. The air gets hot, which results in inefficient compression if you try to compress it further, so it goes through the intercooler which sheds some heat, then it goes into the second smaller stage which brings it to it's final pressure. Staging is all about creating pressure efficiently. It does not increase compressor output, it improves efficiency when going to higher pressure. There is a good IR reference book called Air Power which describes it well. Single stage compressors become very hot and inefficient at higher pressures but will outperform 2 stage machines up to about 100-120 psi.

There was a good explanation of a 2 stage. A single stage is 1,2 or 3 cylinders of the same size running in parallel. The give away for a single stage is the air filter(s) feeding all cylinders. Your air filter is clearly only feeding one cylinder. Those things on the sides are the intercoolers that reduce the air temperature of the air coming out of the first cylinder and feed it into the second stage cylinder.

Hello folks. I am also looking for a manual for a Sanborn Compressor:
Model G500BPL60V. I haven't had much luck finding one with general searches. I know some of the story about the company being bought by Coleman...??? Anyway, it seems to be the exact same machine as the "Black Max". Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
