Guy at work has a single stage sanborn air compressor for sale. It's 44gal vertical 5hp made in USA motor runs on 220.

The compressor/motor/tank is in good shape outside pressure switch cover is missing. I have the power to run it and the space (I'll make space)

Is $300 to much for this??

That was your first mistake lol. Oil free are junk.

I have a Sanborn and love it. I think $300 is a fair price for that. You won't find anything decent for $300

Here's my beast.

That looks to be about a 10 cfm pump and these days would be called only 3hp. $300 seems somewhat high to me. Not long ago 60 gallon compressors with the same pump setup were around $400. I think HF sells a similar 60 gallon for right around 400. The asking price might be better if the pressure switch cover wasn't missing.

I have a Sanborn single stage on a 60 gallon tank with what looks like the same motor you have. It is not 5HP. I replaced my cover on eBay for cheap. Try to get him down.

A look at that 15 amp current on motor plate tells you it is not close to 5 hp. In fact the 2 stage 5hp big box store compressors where the motor usually says "special" instead of listing the hp, are not 5 hp either. It all comes down to CFM, which is what really counts. An interesting fact is that some of the single stages actually deliver more air at lower maximum pressure but there are a lot of negatives in the trade off.

To put these prices in perspective; the replacement Sanborn compressor pump on my 60gallon single stage is $280.

paid 250 for an older 60 gal "5hp" sanborn. Ends up being closer to a 3hp compressor when you compare amp draw. It's better than what I was running, and has a lot more tank capacity. 300 for that one seems steep especially when you look at the one SMKS posted currently showing on sale for 400.

Yeah that's a very run of the mill compressor. 200 would be pushing my Max on that thing. Brand new with warranty you can find basically the same thing for 400 every day of the week if you have a good selection of big box stores around.

I bought a 2 HP 22 gal USA built Sunburn 33 years ago and it is still running strong. It has not had the most diligent of maintenance. I think $300 is a price I would pay.

Good luck.

230v 15a single phase = 3hp
Yup, or just a shade over (3.1 - 3.3, depending upon motor efficiency).

And what's most interesting is that compressors using this same motor, at the peak of the compressor horsepower inflation era (right before the class-action lawsuit shut it down), were labeled 6.5HP or even 7HP. I used to walk through the Sears store tool section every year or two and see how high the number was up to, just for kicks & grins.

So is mine a true 6hp or is that inflated?ba2e1f26082e5d9362d4a2e4c38d10ab.jpg

At 24 amps, that's a bona-fide 6HP motor. 24 amps x 240 volts = 5760 watts x 0.8 efficiency = 4608 W divided by 746 watts/HP = 6.2HP. This is approximate as we don't know the exact efficiency of your motor, but it does show that no way no how does a motor that only draws 15 amps at 240V make 5HP.

Motor efficiency can be anywhere between 70 - 90%. The less-expensive motors usually have a lower efficiency.
