I got my 30Gal Sanborn compressor off of CL for $100 and about 2 months later I was looking at it air up and it was at 180lbs in a 155 max pressure tank. I grabbed the release valve and the compressor has not worked the same since. I think that I need a new pressure switch for it, but I also see where it could be a burst disk. Any ideas for how I can determine which one to purchase

I know on my 60gal Sanborn, when I got it from my dad after sitting for quite some time, mine would go way above what the tank was spec'd for. I found out that the Air Pressure Cutoff switch has a high & low adjustment where I set it to kick on @ 90psi & cutoff @ 120psi. Turning the high limit screw all the way it got damn near 140psi and was still going up.

I don't know exactly what yours has but it might be a place to start.

Post a picture of it including the Air Pressure Cutoff switch...

If that valve won't close on it's own then yes I would get it replaced. Those valves I believe are spring loaded and rated for a few pounds over the factory max pressure setting to keep it from getting to a catastrophic pressure level. Once it falls back within limits it should close on it's own.

When the pressure switch says "I don't feel like working anymore" it is

time to replace the ******. If it suddenly does not shut the machine

down at the proper pressure, and is, in fact, way out of the ballpark, and

trying to adjust the ON/OFF settings doesn't work out, then you have to

conclude that its' service life is: over.
