Well, the masons finished the block on Saturday and now I have a moat around the inside of the foundation. Can I use the pile of sand they left me as fill or will it give me problems when it comes time to do the stone/compaction routine ? I want to put about 4-5" on top of the footer just to force the water to a low corner so I can pump it out. Thoughts ?

yes, we do it everyday, sand is perfect for wet areas, we build whole building and roadways on pure sand.

Sand is a great base material as long as it isn't real fine like beach sand. Normal sharp mason's sand will work.
