Screen all your media through a kitchen strainer before you buy more media. I screen ALL media that I use, even new. I often find debris. The kitchen strainers I use are about 6 inches in diameter. I run the least amount of media in a cabinet that it will successfully blast with. Excess media can compact the media below it reducing the flow. Whatever the screen catches, including media, reject it.
Thank you so much for your suggestion! It was suggested before, to buy a sifter from skat/tptools, and I should've listened.
Steel shot is separating nicely! I'm also using a tumbler to help with the shaking!
Pretty much separated steel shot and alox by hand, now just tumbling steel shots to get the left overs that will sift through the strainer.
Can't wait to see how it will blast with alox with all the upgrades I did to my system!

Interesting how much debris is in abrasives fresh out of a container, and even more once it is used a bit. I learned what I know about blasting from the school of hard knocks beginning about 40 years ago. I run two cabinets, one with glass beads and one with alox, and personally have never had the need for anything else in a cabinet for my refurbish projects.

Media was completely clean before I used it.
So all the debris is my fault.

Now with clean media and with alox alone, the blasting experience is completely different. I can now take the paint off the axles. And I think the clogging is over, but it's still kinda hit in bursts from time to time. Not a perfectly smooth blasting yet.

I still can't get to some very tight spaces on the axles, so I had to use a pick tool to remove old paint. Blasting won't take it out and won't dislodge it. Just doesn't hit hard enough in tight crevices to brake the old paint. Maybe I'll try it with steelshots alone one day.

Also just realized that my alox is all getting eaten by the vacuum,. Since it's not mixed with steelshot anymore, it's not as heavy. I gotta get that dust separator now.

I'm considering installing a heat exchanger to cool the air going into the tank. I'm only wondering if there another option instead of bending copper pipes?
Like for water, they have pex, but there's also flexible hoses. I'm not sure if anything like that exists for hot air.
Similar to water braded flexible hoses.
Would make things easier by avoiding to make fittings and bending pipes.

As Rat Rod Bob would say, you getting it, you just ain’t got it yet! Keep plugging along, you will get it.
Another factor is a gun to use with a foot pedal instead of a trigger gun. Some of the other guns allow for various sizes of air jets and blast nozzles to be used, and allow the air jet to be adjusted forward and aft to fine tune the media suction at the gun. I have experimented and make my own air jets to allow me to blast with the compressor at full blast, then when I stop, the compressor runs about 45 additional seconds. I actually use a vacuum gauge attached to the gun’s media inlet to set my gun to provide the strongest vacuum. On the first trial of this I was able to adjust my gun from 4 inches to around a vacuum of 15.

There is all the info you can handle in my abrasive blasting thread if you have time for the reading.

I've read your thread, just didn't get it, how do you adjust gun suction? Wow you've been sandblasting for many years!
I purchased dust separator, so hopefully won't be sucking all my media in the vacuum.1000063844.jpg

I also found a heat resistant hose, but they're way too pricey, so will just go with copper tubing to add an aftercooler.

To attach the copper pipe I'll try to use compression fittings, just stuff off Amazon.
I know it's recommended to use flares, but I'd need two different sets of flaring tools. AN8 fitting requires 37 angle flare instead of standard 45...
When I took apart original pipe from my speedaire compressor, it actually only has compression fittings, and no leaks. So I'll try those and hope they don't leak.
Swagelok fittings are super pricey.
The aftercooler with accessories will already cost me as much as the compressor itself, and I got 2 compressors...

If you look at the rear of the gun you will see a locknut. This is loosened and allows the threaded part to be run into or out of the gun. The air jet is attached to this part, which allows the air jet to be adjusted nearer to the cone in the rear of the blast nozzle or further away. This affects that venturi area and also affects the suction at the media port. I temporarily remove the media hose and have a vacuum gauge with a urethane adapter on it that goes into the media port to read the vacuum. Once adjusted, the media hose goes back in place.

I lost this thread for a while but found it again.
I've been blasting with great success so far, with skat gun and carbine nozzle.
I don't think i adjusted anything.

The one problem I'm having is media collects around the perimeter and on the door very fast. That's really annoying.
Im going to install these cuffs, now after using the sandblaster for a while I believe they're worth it

Today I did another mod, by removing the cross bars and reducing the metal net inside the blast cabinet, thus also giving me more space to work.
Second part of the video

Lastly, I could not resist and purchased a 2 stage 80 gallon 5hp compressor.
I don't know why, but the on/off switch is nowhere to be found....I have to plug/Unplug it from the outlet.
