Sanding in tight areas

Hi,

I have an alternator housing that I would like to polish but in order to do so there is some rough castings that need to be sanded, now the problem I have is there is some areas that I cannot get into very easily.

I have a small belt sander that takes 10mm wide belts but it's still too big to get in there.

I have attached a photo, the main issue I am having right now is between the ribs. The spacing between them is approx 10mm or 3/8"

Just wondering if there are any tools/products out there that will make things easy for me.

Any advice or suggestions would be good.

Thanks

I would recommend some sort of rotary tool like a dremel. Another option is to use some emry cloth, you could cut it to size and work it in like polishing a shoe.

I have a die grinder here that I tried with a drum sander attachment, it sort of worked but because it is round it isn't able to sand all of it. Also the sanding drums kept flying off lol.

Regarding the emery cloth, I was trying to avoid having to do it manually if I can :)

I would use a Dremel, I have the LCD model and the larger heavy duty one that comes with the flex shaft that makes it easier in limited space.

Thanks, JASTECH

My die grinder is pretty much the same thing as the dremel I think, any bits you recommend to get in there?

Most die grinders are 1/4", a Dremel is 1/8", you can get smaller bits for the Dremel. You can start out with a burr to knock the heavy casting flash off, then sand.

you may want to check into a head porting kit for a die grinder.
the ones i bought in the past had tapered cartridge rolls that should be small enough to get in there,
or use a dremel, seems like dremel sanding drums are 1/4" and 1/2"
