I started sanding old red craftsman tool box down to bare metal so I can repaint it a darker color. For the time being I am just using a medium/coarse sanding block. I am going to buy a sander because it takes too much time doing it by hand. A somewhat cheap orbital sander should do the job shouldn't it? Also, should I just continue using medium/coarse sandpaper to take the old paint off down to bare metal? Any other steps I am missing besides sanding it down, cleaning and primer, paint clear coat? Thanks.

Don't go down to bare metal, there is no need.

You don't really even need to prime unless you are filling. Sand it down with 400 and spray

This is what I tried to tell you in your other post...your wasting your time and energy going to bare metal....but you seem to have your mind made up so good luck

I just thought it would be best to sand down to bare metal and start over for best result. I only have part of the top of the box sanded down to bare metal but maybe I will stop if it doesn't make much difference. I will just sand it down quick with 400 grit like posted and use the primer paint mix and see what the final result is.
