Didn't know if I had anything special here, but didn't really care. Happy to replace my Chinese plastic level with this USA 24 inch level that I pulled from someone's curbside. One shattered external glass piece that' easily replaceable. A good bit of cleaning up should make it nice.

Could be way old, could be newer repop, but guessing it isn't china.

All I could find online

Looks like a nice find. Make sure you take pics if your going to repair it. Tools are about the only thing I try to focus buying made in America. My level is made by TaskForce 8$ and made in usa. Surely not as nice as that find you have.

You stopped your car and raided someone's garbage for a broken tool? Shameful! :)
The first time I did that it was for an electric edger about 15 years ago The motor rubbed against a wire, cutting it in half. 20 minutes of disassembly/reassembly, 5 minutes of repair, and a $0.10 spice and it was running. Gas powered would be better, but a nearly free tool that I needed and had been considering purchasing that very week.

Not sure how old this conversation is and I'm new here so I'm not even sure I'm posting this right. But anyhow here is mine. Still works although it's missing a couple of the glass covers the level floats are still there and I occasionally use it but mostly it sits on top of a dresser with a few other antique tools. I saw briefly on eBay one just like it number 28 but it was from Wichita so they must have been making them in a few places. The building I do maintenance on that I found the level at is a little over 100 years old.

I bought my 24 inch Sands in the early 80's and have used it hundreds of times. A few months ago our local Restore had an 18 inch one for $5, and thought hell ya!, and snapped it up.

McMaster sells Sand's. I stumbled into them when we needed a good level to level our mill and lathe at work. McMaster says the 24" and 48" are are good for 0.005" per foot, way better than other options for standard box levels, and even better than a Starrett precision level at 0.015" per foot. I do take the 0.005"/ft with a grain of salt though, seems too good to be true.

I have 24” and 48” Sands levels. They’re just as nice as any high end level I’ve ever used. Very nicely made. I got them as a birthday gift several years back.

Harry J Epstein has blem Sands levels for a pretty good price. When I picked up a mahogany brass edge 48 incher, they showed me the blems were cosmetic. It was under 60 bucks if I remember right.
