Found some screw drivers here at work and they look pretty darned nice. Says Sandvik Belzer BE-8620. I wouldn't mind having this at home - how do they rate?

Unfortunately, no. They do still make them, but they aren't the same.

Belzer was bought out by Bahco, which was then bought out by Snap-on. They've moved production a couple times as well, so they truly aren't the same screwdrivers.

They are still nice, but not the insanely durable workhorses they were when still branded Belzer.

Dowidat?
Dowidat==Gedore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gedore
And also Rahsol, Carolus etc...

Gedore was founded by the 3 "Dowidat" brothers: Otto, Karl und Willi Dowidat. One brother died and the other 2 split up, one kept Gedore ("Otto Dowidat") the other brother started his own tool company, the "Dowidat-Werke" ("Willi Dowidat"). In 1975 the Dowidat-Werke merged with Belzer to form germany´s biggest tool company "DWU BELZER DOWIDAT" ("DWU - Deutsche Werkzeug Union")

I know this thread is a couple of years old, but I saw it and had to comment...

Back in the late 90's to early 2000's, AT&T / Bell Labs Innovations / Lucent Technologies used to use these very same screw drivers, as well as a number of other products by Sandvik Belzer.

The picture above is one of their ESD screw drivers -- I know because I still have 3 of mine from that time -- a BE-8600 (small phillips), a BE-8610 (larger phillips), and a BE-8030 (small flat head, same length as the BE-8610).

These things have been used for many MANY years on many MANY electronics. The tips are magnetic, so that you can hold and insert screws directly into areas you could not get your hands or fingers into...

I need to find more of these....my three are sitting right here on my desk still, right where I used them last earlier this week....

Thanks for the history lesson about who purchased who and what...now to track some more of these down.... ;}

Quality tool!!!

I had a couple of the Phillips Protip models and they grabbed the screw so well I actually broke the tip of the screwdriver before stripping the screw!!! Of course they were warrantied but the new ones weren't as good.
