Save The Down Spout Project

[HAP]

I recently installed a basketball goal for my 11 yo son and thought I'd better stay ahead of the game and avoid having to replace the down spout every weekend. Knowing that as he gets older the games will become more spirited and I thought this project would be a little more fun than douwnspout repairs. I let my son do the design with a few leading hints. This is what we settled on. It's 1/2" SS; I just love SS... He is now boasting about designing the protector and that was my goal to begin with getting him involved with projects like this. Mission complete!

That said, it looks like you might need to go up the wall another 4-6 feet for full protection!

Perhaps, but considering how the end of the downspout sheet metal can be kind of sharp, this could potentially prevent an injury too.

Drilled a smaller 1/4" hole all the way through each hole for drainage. Thanks for asking...

The first "goals" were made out of peach baskets. We just dropped the word peach and call them "baskets".

Hopefully the 4" thick foam pad around the post will minimize that potential. Now running into the house is another story...

That's some serious protection. You may want to get a can of spray foam though and close off the bottom of the vinyl corner to keep bees and spiders from setting up residency in there.

Basketballs have a lot of inertia when in motion. They break things that you thought were strong... We have a basket in the shop as well and the lower bracket is cracked on it from ball action. I thought the weld had cracket but its the frame itself. Easy fix...

Call them a Basket, a hoop or a goal ring. Interesting history was the bottom was taken out of the basket after the goal was scored through the ring as the ball was to hard to get.

What other protective ideas could you use the same as the protection around the spout ?

Basketball was invented in 1891 and from what I've read it took them 10 years to figure out that removing the bottom of the basket would make things a lot easier!

One of us is miss-understanding a whole bunch of people. I read through the thread and other than a couple lighthearted chuckles, everyone is impressed by the craftsmanship and ingenuity.
