Wow. Reminds me of the time an aquaintance of mine was going to throw out a new vacuum cleaner. She knew I was in need of one, but didn't have the $$ to spend on one. She told me that if I could make it work again and use it, I could have it. She said it worked great for the first month or so of use, but as time went on, it had less and less suction, until it stopped picking up dirt at all. I was thinking... could it be that it just needed a new bag? So, I took it off her hands and I was right. LOL! It just need a new bag. I used that thing for years before it finally gave out.

The local private scrap yard has a weight in weight out rule but most of the employees have first dibs. The guys that manage the county run transfer stations are usually pretty cool and have a spot they set stuff aside for other people to take since they as employees cant. The main county dumb wont let you take anything and there has been some really good stuff in the past too.
My wife gives me heck every time I come back with stuff but I've gotten some pretty good stuff including recently a set of aluminum heads that got me $50 at the scrap yard, a set of planer boards for the boat, a like new weber smoker and two wire shelf units for the garage.

A friend of my dad's did get a snowblower from the scrapyard not running and did turn over.He had to do some carburetor work to it and it ran good.Still has it.
I've been lucky. People put those out at the curb for recycling and I pick 'em up and get 'em rolling pretty easily.

It's amazing what people toss in the garbage. I dropped some recyclables off at the town's recycling area, and a guy was loading up a couple of near mint Suzuki Shuttle mopeds -- a red one and a blue one. He said someone had leaned them against the dumpster. He didn't try to start them (old gas) but said the compression was great in both when he kicked them over.
Those are probably worth at least $1,000 for the pair to the right buyer. Probably someone was cleaning out their parent's house and saw them in the garage and tossed them.
I'm something of a Suzuki motorcycle collector, and now and then have looked for one of those little mopeds - you're right, a pair of them in near mint condition probably are worth $1000.

I also, had luck with a curb-side snowblower.
Driving to work on morning I see this 26" Gilson snowblower (with electric start!!) by a guy's trash cans. I stopped and noticed the lady of the house was just getting in her car so I asked if I could take the snowblower. She was actually rather snitty about it and said that if I took it I couldn't bring it back as it would now be my problem. Geeezzzz .... glad she wasn't my wife!
Loaded it in the truck and got out of there ASAP! That evening after a few minutes of trouble-shooting I locate a broken wire to the dead-man switch in the handle bar. Five minutes to fix that and the snowblower ran like a champ!
She didn't need to worry about me bringing that blower back!!
